Chapter 1 - The Ash and The Echo.

.The dining room fell into a suffocating silence.

The crystal chandelier above seemed to flicker,

casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten feast

Clara Hale pressed both hands beneath the curve of her stomach and waited for the pressure to pass.

Across the table, Ethan checked his watch.

He wore the same gray suit he had worn to every important meeting during their five-year marriage.

His light blue shirt stood open at the collar, as if even a necktie had become more commitment than he could tolerate.

“Was that another contraction?”

Clara nodded.

“Six minutes apart.”

Ethan pushed back his chair with a scrape that made her flinch.

“Then stop timing them.”

She stared at him.

“The doctor said to go in when they were regular.”

“The doctor also said false labor is common.”

Another pain tightened around her back before she could answer.

Clara rose slowly, one hand gripping the table.

Her white maternity dress pulled across her stomach, and a dark crescent of spilled water marked the hem.

Ethan gathered two expensive shopping bags from beside the sideboard.

He had refused to tell her what was inside them.

“Where are you going?”

“I have one thing to handle.”

It was the phrase Ethan used whenever an explanation might give Clara the power to disagree.

He had used it before missed ultrasounds, vanished savings, and dinners where he returned wearing somebody else's perfume.

Each time, he made her questions sound like accusations.

Each time, she apologized for asking them.

“Ethan, I need the hospital.”

He walked through the entryway and opened the front door.

Warm afternoon sunlight flooded the polished floor.

Clara followed him onto the suburban porch because panic had made obedience impossible.

The black SUV waited in the driveway with its engine running.

Her hospital bag was not in the back seat where she had left it.

“Where is my phone?”

Ethan looked over his shoulder.

For one instant, something colder than impatience moved across his face.

“Inside.”

“I checked inside.”

The next contraction struck without warning.

Clara folded against the porch rail, then collapsed to her knees.

The shopping bags rustled as Ethan stepped around her.

“Please.”

Her voice came out small and frightened.

“The twins are coming.”

Ethan glanced toward the neighboring houses.

The street was empty in the bright August heat.

“You always make everything a crisis.”

He placed the bags in the SUV.

Clara reached toward him as pain drove her lower.

“Call an ambulance.”

He opened the driver’s door.

“Don't you dare move until I come back.”

“Ethan, the twins are coming, I need the hospital now!”

He got behind the wheel.

The SUV rolled backward while she screamed his name.

It did not slow at the end of the driveway.

Clara dragged herself toward the front door.

It had swung shut behind her.

The keypad flashed red when she entered the code.

Ethan had changed it.

She pounded the brass knocker, although nobody waited on the other side.

Then she noticed the blue light on the doorbell camera.

Clara pressed the button and held it until her thumb went numb.

“Please hear me.”

A man's voice crackled through the tiny speaker.

“Ma'am, this is Officer Daniel Mercer.”

Relief lasted less than a second.

His next words made the blood drain from her face.

“Do not try to stand, because the first baby is already coming.”
