Chapter 12 - Lorraine's Offer.

Lorraine ordered Clara to come alone.

She promised Mara would remain alive if Clara signed the authority before midnight.

Daniel wanted a tactical team.

Clara wanted proof Mara was still in the house.

Lorraine sent a live video of Mara beside the half-eaten feast.

The chandelier cast the same hard shadows across the table.

Mara's lip was bruised, but her eyes were alert.

She tapped one finger against the chair in a repeating pattern.

Daniel recognized Morse code.

GARAGE EMPTY.

The message warned them that the most important evidence was no longer at Lorraine's estate.

It also meant Ethan was moving while his mother bought time at the table.

Clara wondered whether Lorraine knew she was being used as a distraction.

The answer no longer changed Clara's decision.

Ethan had moved the SUV.

Clara agreed to enter the house wearing a wire while officers surrounded the block.

The twins remained inside the hospital's secure suite with Rachel and Maya.

Cool rain slicked the porch where Noah and Ava had been born.

Clara paused at the dark stain in the wood before opening the door.

Lorraine waited in the dining room with Leonard.

Mara's wrists were tied with silk napkins rather than rope.

The arrangement was theatrical, designed to frighten without leaving obvious injuries.

Lorraine had even replaced the spoiled meal with fresh plates arranged to match the original photograph.

She wanted the room to tell Clara that the afternoon could be recreated until Clara finally obeyed.

Instead, the imitation revealed how desperately Lorraine feared time moving forward.

“Where is Ethan?” Clara asked.

Lorraine slid a fountain pen across the table.

“Correcting the damage you caused.”

Leonard placed the forged trust document beside the medical authority.

“Sign, and this family stops fighting.”

“This family never stopped fighting.”

Clara looked at Mara.

“It only stopped admitting who started it.”

Lorraine's composure fractured.

She said Thomas Vale had poisoned Ethan with humiliation.

She said Mara betrayed her own blood for a stranger's approval.

She said Clara had stolen the future Lorraine spent decades building.

“You left me outside,” Clara said.

“I was inside for four minutes.”

The admission traveled through Clara's wire.

Outside, officers logged the time and words.

Daniel reminded them to wait until Clara or Mara faced immediate danger.

Every second of restraint sickened him, but an early entry could allow Lorraine to dismiss the conversation as coercion.

Lorraine continued, unaware that Daniel was listening.

She had disabled the phone and changed the door code while Ethan distracted Clara.

She expected fear to make Clara sign when Ethan returned.

She insisted no one expected the labor to progress so quickly.

“You heard me screaming.”

Lorraine's eyes flickered toward the window.

“Women scream during childbirth.”

Mara lunged against the chair.

Leonard grabbed her shoulder.

Clara lifted the pen.

“Let her go first.”

Lorraine untied one wrist.

That was enough.

Mara struck Leonard with the wooden chair arm and rolled beneath the table.

Police entered through the kitchen and front door.

Leonard surrendered.

Lorraine did not.

She tore the wire from Clara's dress and crushed it beneath her heel.

Then she smiled toward the officers.

“You recorded a frightened mother negotiating with an unstable woman.”

Daniel entered holding a second receiver.

“We recorded a confession.”

Lorraine's smile remained.

“Then you should ask where my son took the twins.”

Clara's heart stopped.

Her phone rang from the hospital.

Rachel was crying.

The secure family suite was empty.

I DIDN'T WAIT FOR YOU
