Chapter 10 - The Wrong Elevator.

Mara threw a canvas sheet over the man's phone before he could capture the metal case.

Evelyn triggered the greenhouse alarm from outside.

Its siren shattered the quiet and sent the intruder running toward his car.

Before fleeing, he kicked the metal case into a drainage trench.

Water soaked several documents, but Mara had encrypted copies elsewhere.

What frightened her was not the damage.

It was the speed with which Ethan had found a meeting arranged without phones.

He escaped with enough footage to place Clara at the meeting.

By morning, Leonard had filed it with the court.

He described Mara as an unidentified criminal manipulating a medically fragile mother.

The emergency custody hearing was moved forward to that afternoon.

Clara returned to St. Matthew's for the twins' follow-up examination before court.

She kept Noah and Ava beside her under Rachel's watch.

Maya checked their lungs, reflexes, weight, and identification bands.

Both babies were healthy.

Maya let Clara listen to each heartbeat through a tiny monitor.

Noah's rhythm was quick and steady.

Ava's was equally strong, as if the girl had already decided nobody would rewrite her existence.

Clara kissed both blue bracelets.

For ten minutes, Clara allowed herself to believe that health might be enough.

Then the fire alarm sounded.

Hospital doors released automatically.

Nurses began moving patients away from the elevators.

A man in transport scrubs entered the examination room with a wheelchair bassinet.

His shoes were polished black instead of hospital-safe rubber.

His badge displayed the wrong color stripe for neonatal staff.

Rachel noticed both details a moment before Clara recognized his hand.

“Neonatal evacuation.”

Rachel asked for his identification.

He displayed a badge too quickly.

Clara recognized the scar beside his thumb from the greenhouse video.

“That's him.”

The man grabbed the bassinet and ran.

Rachel pulled Noah free before the wheels cleared the doorway.

Ava remained inside.

Clara chased him despite the pain tearing through her abdomen.

He reached the elevator as its doors opened.

Maya struck the emergency-stop button from the nurses' station.

The doors froze halfway closed.

Clara wedged herself through the gap and locked both arms around the bassinet.

“Let go,” the man hissed.

“I learned that word on my porch.”

She drove the wheel brake down with her bare foot.

Security officers tackled the man before he could lift Ava.

The fire alarm stopped.

There had never been a fire.

Someone had activated a manual station beside the service entrance.

Police found a burner phone in the man's pocket.

Its latest message read TAKE THE GIRL, NOT THE BOY.

Leonard's number was not attached.

Neither was Ethan's.

The sender had used a private relay.

The failed abduction changed the custody hearing.

The judge ordered both parents to remain under observation and placed the twins with Clara in a secure family suite.

Ethan arrived with cameras from a local news station waiting outside.

He told reporters he was horrified by the attack.

He blamed Mara.

Inside the courthouse, he approached Clara beside the wrong elevator and whispered so only she could hear.

“You should have signed.”

Clara pressed the button on the small recorder hidden in her sleeve.

Ethan smiled.

“That device won't save you.”

He pointed to the security guard standing behind her.

May you like

The guard removed Clara's recorder and handed it directly to Leonard.

I DIDN'T WAIT FOR YOU
