Chapter 10 - The Page That Did Not Belong.
After the police left, Olivia locked the green folder inside a fireproof document case from Daniel's office.
"No one touches the originals alone."
Daniel nodded.
Emily sat at the kitchen island and replayed Margaret's last sentence in her head.
You still have no idea what is inside it.
"She wanted me to find something."
Olivia looked up from her laptop.
"Why do you think that?"
"Because I found the folder too easily."
Daniel frowned.
Emily explained that Margaret kept her important papers in a locked desk drawer.
The drawer had been locked for months.
Yesterday, it had been slightly open.
Inside sat the dark green folder, almost perfectly centered.
"I thought she forgot to lock it."
Olivia leaned back.
"Maybe she did."
"Margaret does not forget locks."
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"Then what was bait?"
They copied every page and arranged the documents by date.
That was when Olivia noticed the problem.
"This one."
She held up a notarized authorization supposedly granting Margaret limited authority over the house.
Emily had assumed it was another forgery.
Olivia pointed at the notary stamp.
"This commission number is real."
Daniel searched the name.
The notary worked for his own company.
"I know her."
"Call her."
Daniel did.
The notary, a woman named Rachel Dunn, sounded confused.
She remembered the document.
She also remembered Daniel signing it.
"That can't be right," Daniel said.
Rachel described the exact day.
It was during Daniel's company's holiday party.
Margaret had arrived with a stack of estate-planning papers and told Daniel they were updates related to his father's trust.
Daniel remembered signing several pages while talking to clients.
His stomach dropped.
"I didn't read them."
Emily closed her eyes.
Margaret had not forged everything.
Some documents were genuine because Daniel had signed them without reading.
Olivia said, "That matters."
Daniel looked terrified.
"How much authority did I give her?"
Olivia read the clause carefully.
The document allowed Margaret to communicate with lenders and request information related to Daniel's interest in the property.
It did not allow her to borrow against Emily's share.
It did not authorize her to transfer ownership.
But it created enough legitimacy for a careless lender to believe Margaret was acting with Daniel's consent.
Emily looked at Daniel.
"She built the fraud around one real signature."
Olivia nodded.
"That is what makes it dangerous."
They continued sorting.
Near the back of the folder was a page Emily had barely noticed.
It was a printed email from Daniel to Margaret.
The message said, Do whatever you need to do with the house. Emily doesn't understand this stuff.
Emily stared at it.
Daniel stared too.
"I never wrote that."
Olivia examined the header.
"This email was sent from your account."
Daniel opened his sent folder.
The message was gone.
Emily's chest tightened.
"Did she have your password?"
"Years ago."
"When did you change it?"
Daniel looked ashamed.
"I don't know."
Olivia asked the company's IT department to preserve login records.
An hour later, they received a preliminary response.
The message had been sent from an IP address associated with Daniel and Emily's home.
At 2:13 a.m.
On a night Daniel had been asleep beside Emily.
Emily whispered, "She was in the house."
Daniel looked toward the guest suite.
Then he remembered something.
"The smart home tablet."
The family kept a shared tablet in the kitchen for music, lighting, and deliveries.
Daniel had once logged into his email on it.
He had never logged out.
Margaret did not need to hack him.
He had left the door open.
Olivia's phone buzzed.
Marcus Bell was calling.
She put him on speaker.
"We found another filing connected to Friday," Marcus said.
Daniel leaned forward.
"What filing?"
"A petition to declare you financially incapacitated."
Daniel went completely still.
Emily felt her blood run cold.
Marcus continued.
"Your mother claims you are unable to manage your affairs because of severe emotional instability."
Olivia asked, "Who is proposed as conservator?"
Marcus answered.
"Margaret Hayes."
