Chapter 8 - The Fall That Was Supposed to Make Emily Guilty.

Security escorted Margaret from the records room but did not detain her because Daniel had not yet decided whether to make a formal complaint.
Emily hated that hesitation.
"She forged signatures, stole my identity, and tried to take our house."
Daniel looked exhausted.
"I know."
"Then why are you still protecting her?"
"I'm trying to understand what happens if I call the police on my mother."
Emily stared at him.
"You keep asking what happens to her."
Daniel looked up.
Emily's voice stayed quiet.
"Try asking what happens to us if you don't."
Olivia arrived twenty minutes later carrying a laptop bag and an expression that made Daniel straighten instinctively.
She listened without interrupting while Emily summarized the morning.
Then Olivia reviewed the documents.
"You have enough here to freeze the civil side immediately."
Daniel asked, "And the criminal side?"
"That is not my practice area, but identity theft, forgery, and bank fraud are not misunderstandings."
Daniel looked away.
Olivia continued.
"I also want copies of every security camera feed from your home and this building before anyone can claim something happened differently."
Emily nodded.
That request saved them three hours later.
They returned home just after noon.
Margaret's car was in the driveway.
Daniel swore.
"How did she get back in?"
Emily remembered the spare key.
They had recovered one.
They had not checked whether Margaret had copied it.
The front door was unlocked.
Margaret stood at the top of the staircase wearing a different robe and holding an ice pack to her wrist.
"You came back."
Daniel's voice was flat.
"This is our home."
Margaret looked at Emily.
"Not for long."
Olivia stepped forward.
"Mrs. Hayes, I'm Olivia Grant, counsel for Emily."
Margaret smiled.
"Of course she brought a lawyer."
"You need to leave the property."
"My son invited me to live here."
Daniel said, "The invitation is over."
Margaret stared at him.
The color drained from her face.
"You are throwing your mother into the street?"
"You sold your condo for eight hundred thousand dollars."
Margaret's eyes flicked toward Emily.
"She told you that."
"Public records told me."
Margaret took one step down.
Then another.
"Daniel, come upstairs with me."
"No."
She took a third step and suddenly pitched forward.
Emily saw it happen in a strange, slow sequence.
Margaret's hand released the banister.
Her body twisted.
She landed hard on the carpeted lower steps and cried out.
Daniel rushed forward.
Margaret clutched her ankle.
"She pushed me!"
Emily did not move.
Olivia's eyes sharpened.
"No one was near you."
Margaret pointed at Emily.
"She pushed me from behind!"
Daniel looked up the staircase.
Emily stood ten feet away beside Olivia.
Margaret began sobbing.
"Call the police."
Daniel's face collapsed into horror.
For one terrible second, Emily saw doubt return.
Then Olivia calmly lifted her phone.
"Good idea."
She pointed toward the small black security camera mounted above the foyer arch.
"And while we wait, we can preserve the video showing exactly what happened."
Margaret stopped crying.
The silence that followed was almost comic.
Daniel slowly stood.
"You staged that."
Margaret said nothing.
"You were going to accuse Emily of pushing you down the stairs."
Margaret's eyes filled again.
"I panicked."
Emily felt something inside her go completely cold.
"No."
She picked up the green folder from the console table.
"You planned it."
Margaret looked at the camera.
Emily followed her gaze.

A small piece of black electrical tape was stuck to the wall beneath it.
Someone had tried to cover the lens and missed.
