Chapter 4 - The Transfer at 9:17 A.M.

Daniel grabbed his phone.
"Did you do this?"
Margaret stared at the screen and then at Emily.
"Of course not."
Emily checked the time.
9:17 a.m.
They had all been in the bedroom or kitchen for nearly twenty minutes.
"Then who did?"
Daniel opened the banking app.
The transfer was pending.
The destination account belonged to M.H. Property Services.
He canceled it before it could clear.
Margaret reached for her own phone.
"Someone must have compromised your account."
Emily watched her unlock the screen with trembling fingers.
"Call the bank."
Daniel did.
He put the call on speaker.
After several security questions, the representative confirmed that the transfer had been requested using a secondary authorized login.
Daniel's eyes went to Margaret.
"Who is the secondary user?"
The representative paused.
"Margaret Hayes."
Margaret immediately started talking.
"Daniel gave me access years ago."
Daniel's face flushed.
"I removed you after the wedding."
The representative explained that a new authorization form had been processed four months earlier.
Emily reached for the folder.
"Ask how it was submitted."
Daniel did.
The answer was worse than either of them expected.
The authorization had been submitted in person.
It included Daniel's signature and a copy of his driver's license.
Daniel whispered, "I never did that."
Margaret moved toward the door.
"I need coffee."
Daniel stepped in front of her.
"You are not leaving."
Margaret's face twisted.
"Move."
"Did you forge my signature?"
"How dare you ask me that?"
"Did you?"
Margaret slapped him.
The sound cracked through the kitchen.
Emily froze.
Daniel did not move.
Margaret stared at her own hand as if it belonged to someone else.
Then she pointed at Emily.
"Look what she is making you do to me."
Daniel touched his cheek.
Something in his expression changed.
The boyish guilt was gone.
"She did not make you hit me."
Margaret's eyes filled with tears almost instantly.
"I am your mother."
"And you hit me because I asked a question."
Emily saw the realization move through him slowly and painfully.
He was not just watching Margaret abuse his wife anymore.
He was standing inside the pattern himself.
Daniel ended the call and changed the banking passwords while Emily watched.
Then he removed Margaret's authorization.
Margaret stood near the refrigerator, breathing through her nose.
"You will regret humiliating me."
Daniel looked up.
"You tried to move one hundred twenty thousand dollars out of our account."
"I was protecting it."
"From what?"
Margaret's eyes shifted toward Emily.
"From divorce."
Emily felt a cold wave run through her.
Daniel stared.
"What divorce?"
Margaret smiled faintly.
"Ask your wife."
Emily shook her head.
"I have never filed for divorce."
"Not yet."
Margaret looked almost pleased.
"But you were going to."
Daniel looked at Emily.
The old doubt flickered for one terrible second.
Emily opened the green folder again.
"This is exactly why I collected evidence before confronting her."
She pulled out a sealed envelope.
"I found this in the locked drawer of your mother's desk yesterday."
Margaret lunged toward it.
Daniel blocked her.
Emily tore the envelope open.
Inside was a draft divorce petition.
Her name appeared at the top.
Daniel's name appeared beneath it.
Emily scanned the first page.
The petition accused Daniel of financial abuse, infidelity, and physical intimidation.
None of it was true.
The final page contained a signature that looked like Emily's.
Daniel looked sick.
"She was going to file this as you."
Margaret shouted, "No!"
Emily turned the page over.
A sticky note was attached to the back.
In Margaret's handwriting were five words.
File after transfer clears Friday.
May you like
It was Sunday.
Friday was five days away.
