Chapter 12 - The Lie Beneath the Bigger Lie.

No one at the table moved.
Daniel stared at Margaret as if he had forgotten how to breathe.
Emily's first instinct was to reach for him.
She stopped when she saw his hand flatten against the table for balance.
"What did you say?"
Margaret's expression was almost peaceful.
"Thomas was not your biological father."
Daniel's aunt whispered, "Margaret, don't."
Margaret ignored her.
"He found out when you were six."
Daniel looked toward the framed family photographs on the wall.
"You're lying."
"Am I?"
Margaret pulled a small envelope from her purse.
Inside was an old laboratory report.
She slid it down the table.
Daniel did not touch it.
Emily did.
The report was dated twenty-four years earlier.
It appeared to show that Thomas Hayes could not be Daniel's biological father.
Margaret watched Emily read.
"Now you understand why he hid money from me."
Emily looked up.
"No."
Margaret's eyes narrowed.
"No?"
"If this is real, it explains why Thomas had complicated feelings."
Emily placed the report back on the table.
"It does not explain why you forged my signature, opened credit in my name, staged a fall, or tried to take legal control of Daniel."
Daniel looked at Emily.
Her words pulled him back into the room.
Margaret's face twisted.
"You think you are so clever."
"I think you use one truth to hide five lies."
Margaret stood.
"Get out."
Daniel finally picked up the report.
"Who was my father?"
Margaret looked at him.
For a moment, genuine pain crossed her face.
"A man who left before you were born."
"Name."
"It does not matter."
"It matters to me."
Margaret shook her head.
"Thomas raised you."
Daniel's laugh was hollow.
"Five minutes ago you used that against him."
Margaret had no answer.
They left the dinner without finishing the meal.
In the car, Daniel sat in the passenger seat while Emily drove.
He stared at the laboratory report in his lap.
"I don't know what is real anymore."
Emily kept her eyes on the road.
"Then we verify it."
"What if it's true?"
"Then Thomas chose to be your father anyway."
Daniel looked at her.
Emily continued.
"And your mother still committed everything she committed."
He nodded slowly.
At home, Sean Mercer joined them by video call.
He had reviewed the incapacity petition.
"The good news is that it is weak."
Daniel almost laughed.
"There is good news?"
"Your mother relies heavily on statements from relatives, but she has no physician supporting incapacity."
Sean recommended a voluntary independent financial capacity evaluation and immediate filing of Daniel's opposition.
Daniel agreed.
Then Olivia asked about the paternity report.
Sean told them not to assume it was authentic.
The next morning, Olivia sent a scanned copy to the laboratory named on the document.
The laboratory still existed.
Its records department called back before noon.
The report number was real.
The patient names were not.
The original report involved two unrelated people.
Someone had altered the names on the copy.
Daniel stared at the email confirmation.
"She forged that too."
Emily felt sick.
Margaret had not merely lied about money.
She had tried to destroy Daniel's memory of his father because Thomas's warning threatened her control.
Then Marcus Bell called again.
"I found the original letter Thomas left with us."
Daniel stood.
"The one she tore?"
"A duplicate."
Marcus's voice softened.
"And Daniel, there is something else in the file."
"What?"
"A video recording your father made six weeks before he died."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Emily took his hand.

The next battle would not be with Margaret's version of Thomas.
It would be with Thomas himself, speaking from eight years in the past.
