Chapter 13 - The Brother Behind the Glass.

The steel shutter slammed into place at the end of the vault corridor.

Rose rushed to the emergency phone.

The line was dead.

Ethan's cell phone had one bar of signal and no successful calls.

Richard's voice returned through the intercom.

The polished confidence in it was familiar from years of board meetings where Richard could describe layoffs, acquisitions, and lawsuits as if human consequences were merely numbers on paper.

Tonight Ethan finally understood what that detachment could become.

“Give me the video drive, and I open the exit.”

Ethan looked at Lily.

“And then what?”

“Then I take care of my family.”

“You stopped being family when you let Hannah die.”

Richard's voice hardened.

“Do not make this sentimental.”

Ethan almost admired the cruelty of the sentence.

Hannah's death had been reduced to a business decision.

A banging sound came from the corridor.

Mercer's voice shouted through the locked door.

“Ethan!”

Rose opened it.

Mercer slipped inside, bleeding from a cut above his eyebrow.

“The manager is down, but alive.”

“Richard?”

“Security room with at least one armed man.”

Mercer looked at the laptop.

“Can we transmit the video?”

“No network.”

Rose pointed toward an old maintenance panel behind the deposit boxes.

“This building used to have a telegraph conduit running to the street.”

Mercer stared at her.

“How do you know everything about this place?”

“Hannah made me learn.”

They opened the panel and found a narrow service passage just wide enough for one person.

Lily looked terrified.

Ethan crouched in front of her.

“You stay between me and Rose.”

They entered the passage.

Dust filled the air.

Metal pipes pressed against Ethan's shoulders.

Behind them, someone began pounding on the vault-room door.

Richard had found another way inside.

The passage climbed toward street level and ended behind an old brass ventilation grille.

Mercer kicked it loose.

Cold night air rushed in.

They emerged into an alley behind the bank.

Police sirens approached from two blocks away.

Mercer's radio finally connected.

He called for units to surround the building.

Ethan thought they had won ten seconds of safety.

Then a black sedan turned into the alley.

Richard sat behind the wheel.

The passenger window lowered.

A man Ethan did not recognize aimed a gun at them.

Mercer shoved Lily behind a dumpster.

Shots exploded against the brick wall.

Rose fell.

Ethan caught her before she hit the pavement.

Blood spread across her coat near the shoulder.

“Go,” she gasped.

Mercer returned fire.

The sedan accelerated toward the alley exit.

Ethan saw Richard's face through the windshield.

There was no panic in it.

Only fury.

Police cruisers blocked the street ahead.

Richard swerved onto the sidewalk and disappeared around the corner.

Paramedics reached Rose moments later.

She was conscious, but barely.

Ethan held her hand.

“Stay with us.”

Rose managed a weak smile.

“Hannah would be furious if I died before seeing Lily turn eight.”

Lily began crying.

Then Mercer's radio crackled.

An officer at the Carter mansion had found Victor's abandoned boat on the north shore.

Victor was gone.

So was Claire.

May you like

She had escaped police custody for the second time.

And security footage showed her leaving with Victor voluntarily.
