Chapter 4 - Behind the Blue Nursery.

The blue nursery smelled of dust, cedar, and the faint lavender soap Hannah used to keep in the linen drawers.

Ethan switched on his phone flashlight and swept the beam across covered furniture.

A faded moon-and-stars mural still covered the far wall.

Lily pointed toward a painted cloud near the baseboard.

“The sound is there.”

Ethan knelt and listened.

Beep.

A pause followed.

Then another beep.

He ran his fingers along the molding until he felt a narrow seam beneath the wallpaper.

Claire appeared in the doorway.

“Ethan, stop.”

He turned.

She was no longer pretending to be confused.

Her face was tight with genuine panic.

“What is behind this wall?”

“I don't know.”

“Hannah did.”

Claire stepped forward.

“You don't understand what she was doing near the end.”

“What does that mean?”

“She was sick with fear.”

“She died in a car accident.”

Claire looked away.

The movement lasted less than a second, but Ethan saw it.

His stomach tightened.

He shoved the edge of the fire poker into the seam and pulled.

A narrow panel released from the wall.

Behind it sat a metal lockbox, an old voice recorder, and a small flashing locator tag.

The beeping came from the recorder.

Lily whispered, “Mom left that?”

Ethan picked it up.

A strip of tape across the back carried a date from four days before Hannah's death.

Claire moved suddenly.

She lunged for the device.

Ethan turned his shoulder and blocked her.

“Don't play it in front of Lily.”

“Why?”

“Because Hannah was terrified and confused.”

“Of Victor?”

Claire said nothing.

Sirens grew louder outside the mansion gates.

Ethan pressed PLAY.

Static filled the room.

Then Hannah's voice came through, soft, breathless, unmistakable.

“If Ethan is hearing this, then I was right to be afraid.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

Lily covered her mouth with both hands.

Hannah continued.

“Victor changed the beneficiary papers without telling Ethan.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“He says the company has to stay under adult control if anything happens to me.”

The recording crackled.

“I found transfers through a Lisbon account.”

Ethan looked at the one-way boarding pass in his hand.

His blood went cold.

Hannah's voice dropped lower.

“I told Claire because I thought she was my friend.”

Claire opened her eyes.

Tears had appeared, but Ethan could not tell whether they were real.

“I was her friend.”

The recorder continued.

“Claire promised to help me prove it.”

Ethan stared at her.

Then Hannah said the words that changed the shape of the entire night.

“If Claire is still in this house when you hear this, ask her why she never told you Victor was in my car the night before I died.”

Police lights flashed through the nursery windows.

Ethan remembered the morning of Hannah's accident, when Claire had arrived before the police called him.

At the time, he had believed it was kindness.

Now the timing felt like another door opening into a room he had refused to see.

Claire whispered, “Because Hannah made me promise.”

A man's voice came from behind them.

“Everybody step away from the box.”

Ethan turned and saw Detective Paul Mercer standing in the doorway with his gun drawn.

Beside him stood Victor Lang.
