Chapter 14 - The Last Performance.

By dawn, the Carter mansion had become the center of a manhunt.

Ethan returned with Lily under heavy police protection because Mercer believed Richard and Victor would come back for the original trust documents.

Rose was stable at the hospital.

Mason remained under guard and had given a full statement.

Claire's disappearance made everything harder.

News vans already waited beyond the gates, turning the family's worst night into a spectacle before sunrise.

Every rumor about Ethan's instability was spreading faster than the facts, which meant Victor's old strategy was still damaging them even while he ran.

Ethan no longer knew whether her attempt to record Victor had been courage or another layer of deception.

Lily sat beside him in Hannah's old bedroom while officers searched the grounds.

“Daddy, why did Claire help the bad man?”

Ethan chose his words carefully.

“Because sometimes people make one selfish choice, then another, until they are trapped inside their own choices.”

“Can they get out?”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the hallway.

“But getting out does not erase what they did.”

At six fifteen, the mansion intercom chimed.

A security officer answered.

Claire's voice came through.

“Ethan, I am at the front gate.”

The foyer filled with armed officers.

Claire entered alone wearing borrowed clothes, barefoot and soaked from the lake.

She raised both hands.

“Victor thinks I am taking him the real vault drive.”

Mercer stepped forward.

“You escaped custody.”

“I needed him to believe I was still useful.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Where is he?”

“Coming here.”

“Why?”

“Richard told him the trust has a paper original hidden in Hannah's room.”

Ethan glanced at the old photograph in Lily's hands.

There was no paper original that he knew of.

Claire saw his confusion.

“Hannah told Richard that years ago to keep him looking in the wrong place.”

Mercer began coordinating an arrest plan.

Claire suddenly pointed at Lily's photograph.

“May I see that?”

“No.”

Claire swallowed.

“Turn it sideways.”

Lily did.

A thin edge of paper protruded from inside the wooden frame.

Ethan pried off the backing.

A folded legal document slid into his hand.

The original trust amendment.

Hannah had hidden it in plain sight.

Claire gave a broken laugh.

“She always was smarter than all of us.”

The front gate alarm sounded.

A black SUV entered the drive.

Victor was inside.

Behind him came a second vehicle.

Richard.

They had arrived separately, each apparently believing Claire was betraying the other.

Mercer whispered, “Nobody moves until they're inside.”

Ethan took Lily toward the safe room.

She stopped halfway.

“Daddy, Mom wrote more.”

He looked down.

Beneath the place where the trust document had been hidden, another handwritten line was visible on the inside frame.

If Victor and Richard ever come together, do not let them see you are afraid of Claire.

Ethan read it twice.

Then he understood.

Hannah had anticipated a final division between the conspirators.

Claire was the one person both men believed they could control.

Ethan turned to her.

“Can you make them turn on each other?”

Claire's face went pale.

“Yes.”

“Then this is your last chance to do one thing Hannah would have wanted.”

Claire nodded.

The foyer doors opened.

Victor walked in first.

Richard followed with his hand inside his coat.

Claire smiled at both men.

May you like

“I have the document.”

And the final performance began.
