Chapter 2 - The One-Way Ticket.

Ethan rose slowly, keeping Lily behind him and the bent boarding pass crushed in his fist.

Claire descended one step, then stopped when Ethan lifted the fire poker between them.

“Don't come closer.”

Claire looked offended rather than frightened.

“You're waving a weapon in front of a child.”

“You locked my child inside luggage.”

“I did not lock her in there.”

Lily gripped the back of Ethan's jacket.

“She did.”

Claire's gaze snapped to the girl with a sharpness that made Ethan turn fully between them.

Mason finally spoke.

“This is getting out of control.”

Ethan laughed once, but there was no humor in it.

“You're half naked in my house, following my wife out of my dead wife's bedroom, and my daughter has a one-way ticket to Portugal.”

Mason raised both hands.

“I didn't buy the ticket.”

Claire's voice hardened.

“Lily was supposed to go to a private school for a few weeks.”

“At midnight?”

“The flight was early.”

“In a suitcase?”

Claire's composure cracked for half a second.

“She hid in it because she was upset.”

Lily stepped around Ethan's side despite his attempt to hold her back.

“You put me in there after the orange juice made me sleepy.”

Silence crushed the foyer.

Claire blinked.

Mason turned toward her.

“You drugged her?”

“I gave her children's allergy medicine because she was hysterical.”

Ethan's hand tightened around the poker until his knuckles hurt.

He wanted to break something else, but Lily was watching him.

He lowered the weapon and reached for his phone.

Claire's expression changed immediately.

“Who are you calling?”

“The police.”

“No.”

The word came too quickly.

Ethan looked up.

Claire recovered and forced a softer tone.

“Think about what this looks like, Ethan.”

He glanced at the shattered suitcase.

“It looks exactly like what it is.”

“No, it looks like an unstable widower came home, destroyed property with an iron bar, and threatened his wife in front of a frightened child.”

The sentence was too polished.

Too prepared.

Mason slowly lowered his hands.

Ethan felt the trap before he understood it.

Claire held up her phone.

On the screen was a live security-camera view of the foyer.

A red recording symbol glowed in the corner.

“You wanted me to come home and find this.”

Claire did not answer.

Ethan looked again at the boarding pass.

A second folded document had been tucked behind it.

He opened it and found a notarized emergency guardianship petition naming Claire as Lily's temporary legal guardian.

The petition described Ethan as violent, paranoid, and psychologically unstable since Hannah's death.

It listed three arguments with Claire, two therapy appointments, and a broken glass from a dinner six months earlier as proof of escalating behavior.

Every private moment of grief had been cataloged and rearranged into a case against him.

At the bottom was the signature of the attorney who had prepared it.

Victor Lang.

Ethan's oldest friend had filed paperwork to take his daughter away two days earlier.

Then the mansion lights went out.

In the darkness, Lily screamed.
