Chapter 12 - The Box Their Father Left Behind.

The safe-deposit box was held at an old private bank downtown.
Conrad had opened it three months before his death.
The bank required extensive verification before allowing access.
By the next morning, Victoria and Eleanor sat together in a private vault room for the first time in almost nine years.
Eleanor was still weak enough to need a wheelchair.
Lily waited upstairs with Mrs. Whitmore and two officers.
Victoria placed the Orchid key into the first lock.
Eleanor signed the authorization beside her.
The bank officer turned the second key.
A long metal box slid from the wall.
Victoria's hands shook as she lifted the lid.
Inside was a sealed envelope, a bound financial audit, an old digital recorder, and the original Ashford family trust.
Eleanor began to cry.
"This is what Malcolm thought burned."
Victoria opened the trust document first.
The clause from Eleanor's hidden recording was real.
Both sisters held equal voting rights.
If either sister became unable to serve, her lawful descendants inherited her position.
Malcolm had never possessed the authority he claimed.
Then Victoria opened their father's letter.
Conrad admitted ordering the study fire.
He wrote that he had been terrified Eleanor would expose the company during a fragile merger and destroy thousands of jobs.
He believed Malcolm when Malcolm promised to preserve copies and bring Eleanor home after the crisis.
Instead, Malcolm used the fire to erase evidence, forge documents, and isolate both daughters.
Conrad discovered the scheme too late.
He tried to remove Malcolm quietly.
Malcolm threatened to expose Conrad's role in the fire and send him to prison.
So Conrad hid the originals and left instructions for his daughters to recover them together.
The letter ended with a sentence Victoria read twice.
I protected the Ashford name and abandoned my daughters while telling myself it was the same thing as protecting them.
Victoria lowered the page.
Eleanor stared at the floor.
Neither woman defended him.
Neither woman needed to.
The digital recorder contained a conversation between Conrad and Malcolm.
Malcolm's voice was clear.
He admitted rerouting trust funds.
He admitted using Daniel's company to move money.
He also admitted arranging false reports about Eleanor's mental health after she threatened to return.
Then came the statement that made Victoria look at Marcus across the room.
"If the girl ever appears, we challenge her paternity and keep the voting shares frozen until she's eighteen."
Lily had been discussed years before she ever walked into the ballroom.
The audit showed more than sixty million dollars missing.
Some of it had financed Malcolm's private investments.
Some had gone to St. Agnes.
Some had gone to Daniel.
And several payments had been made to members of the Ashford board.
Victoria understood immediately.
This was no longer a private family scandal.
It was a corporate conspiracy.
The quarterly board vote was scheduled for that afternoon.
Malcolm planned to use it to remove Victoria as chief executive for "instability" and appoint himself interim chairman.
He believed Eleanor was still hidden.
He believed Lily's claim could be buried.
And he had no idea the original trust was now sitting in front of both sisters.
Victoria closed the metal box.
"We're going to the meeting."
Eleanor looked at her.
"Together?"
May you like
Victoria nodded.
"This time, nobody speaks for either of us."
