Chapter 7 - The Voice Hidden in the Blanket.

Marcus inserted the memory card into an isolated laptop in the back of the SUV.

There was only one audio file.

The recording began with breathing.

Then Eleanor's voice filled the car.

Victoria stopped breathing too.

"My name is Eleanor Ashford Hart."

The voice was older than Victoria remembered, tired and uneven, but unmistakably hers.

"If Victoria hears this, then Lily reached you."

Victoria pressed one hand over her mouth.

Lily leaned closer to the laptop.

Eleanor continued.

She said Malcolm had controlled her through forged debts, false medical reports, and threats for years.

He convinced her that Victoria had chosen the company over her.

Daniel carried messages between them, always claiming Victoria refused contact.

Every message had been a lie.

Then Eleanor made a statement that changed the entire investigation.

"The money Malcolm stole was never the main reason he needed me gone."

Marcus turned up the volume.

"Our mother's trust gives equal voting control to both daughters or their lawful descendants."

Victoria looked sharply at him.

She had never seen that clause.

Eleanor's voice continued.

"If I am declared permanently incompetent, Malcolm becomes temporary trustee of my share."

Victoria's stomach turned.

That explained St. Agnes.

It explained the false mental health records.

It explained why Malcolm needed Eleanor hidden but alive.

And if Eleanor died while declared incompetent, her share would pass to Lily.

That meant Lily was not merely a witness.

She was an obstacle.

Victoria looked at the sleeping child's scratched face and felt rage sharpen into something cold.

The recording continued.

Eleanor had recently found an accountant willing to help her reconstruct the stolen transfers.

He disappeared two weeks later.

She believed Malcolm discovered her investigation.

Three nights ago, men from St. Agnes arrived with a court order.

Eleanor locked Lily in the bathroom, pushed the handbag and blanket through the window, and told her to run to Victoria.

"I told Lily you abandoned us because for years I believed you did."

Eleanor's voice broke.

"If you hear this, Victoria, I know now that I was wrong."

Victoria cried silently.

"You didn't leave us."

A long pause followed.

Then Eleanor whispered,

"But someone close to you did."

The recording ended.

They reached Brookvale before dawn.

The bakery had a faded green awning exactly as Lily described.

The apartment above it had been ransacked.

Drawers lay open.

Furniture had been overturned.

The walls were bare except for a rectangle where a picture had recently hung.

Lily ran to a loose floorboard near the bedroom.

"Mom kept papers here."

The hiding place was empty.

Marcus examined the dust.

"Someone got here first."

One security officer called from the kitchen.

A dark smear marked the back door.

It was not blood.

It was machine grease.

Marcus found tire tracks in the alley.

Lily stood at the window and suddenly pointed across the street.

"That car."

A black sedan idled beside the closed pharmacy.

The instant the driver saw her pointing, the car accelerated.

Marcus ran downstairs.

Victoria pulled Lily away from the window.

Five minutes later, Marcus called.

He had lost the sedan at the highway.

But it had dropped something while turning.

A hotel key card.

The logo belonged to the Beaumont Grand, a luxury hotel in the city.

Victoria knew the hotel well.

Daniel Vale had a permanent suite there.
