Chapter 6 - The Night the Lake House Burned.

Mrs. Whitmore asked Victoria to close the library doors.
Her hands shook so badly that she had to sit down before speaking.
"Your sister did not run away because she stole money."
Victoria felt anger rise instantly.
"Then why did you let me believe it?"
Mrs. Whitmore looked toward Lily.
"Because Mr. Malcolm threatened my son."
The room went silent.
Nine years earlier, Eleanor had discovered unusual transfers from the family trust.
She confronted Malcolm at the lake house during a summer weekend.
Mrs. Whitmore had been there.
So had Daniel, then a junior adviser trying to earn Malcolm's favor.
Eleanor threatened to tell Victoria everything.
Malcolm told her no one would believe a woman with a history of anxiety over the family's most respected executive.
Then he showed Eleanor documents that appeared to prove Victoria had approved the transfers.
"She thought you were part of it," Mrs. Whitmore whispered.
Victoria closed her eyes.
"And the fire?"
Mrs. Whitmore swallowed.
"It started after Eleanor locked herself in the study with the original trust papers."
Malcolm ordered everyone out.
Daniel drove Eleanor away before the firefighters arrived.
By morning, the study was gone.
The original documents were supposedly destroyed.
And Eleanor disappeared from the family completely.
"Why didn't you call the police?"
Victoria's voice cracked.
"I tried."
Mrs. Whitmore reached into her cardigan and removed an old brass locket.
Inside was a tiny photograph of her son.
"Malcolm had him arrested on false theft charges the next day."
She looked ashamed.
"He told me the charges would vanish if I kept quiet."
Victoria wanted to scream.
Instead, she forced herself to listen.
Mrs. Whitmore said Eleanor had returned once, secretly, about eight years ago.
She left a message for Victoria inside the Orchid Room.
Malcolm discovered it first.
After that, the room was sealed.
Lily sat rigidly on the sofa.
"Did Mom have me then?"
"No, sweetheart."
Mrs. Whitmore wiped her eyes.
"I never knew about you."
The private investigator, Marcus Reed, spread the evidence across the library table.
He pointed to the hospital bracelet.
"St. Agnes is not a hospital in the normal sense."
He had already searched its ownership records.
The facility was controlled through a private health company.
That company was owned by another corporation.
And that corporation had received consulting payments from Vale Capital Management.
Daniel again.
Victoria stared at the chain of names.
"Find Eleanor."
Marcus nodded.
"I need to know where Lily was before St. Agnes."
Lily hugged the blanket.
"We lived over a bakery."
"What city?"
"Brookvale."
Marcus looked at Victoria.
It was a river town less than two hours away.
Lily remembered the apartment number, the color of the bakery awning, and the church bell she heard every morning.
That was enough.
At two in the morning, Victoria changed out of her gold gown and into dark trousers and a coat.
She left Ashford House with Marcus, Lily, and two trusted security officers.
Malcolm had been ordered off the property.
Daniel had vanished before anyone could question him further.
Rain began falling as they drove toward Brookvale.
Lily fell asleep against Victoria's shoulder.
Victoria carefully adjusted the pink blanket around her.
For the first time, she noticed tiny stitched letters near the edge.
E.A.
Eleanor Ashford.
Then she saw something else.
One corner of the blanket was heavier than the others.
She opened the seam with a small pair of scissors from the car's emergency kit.
A plastic memory card slipped into her palm.
Marcus stared at it.
Victoria stared back.

Then Lily woke and whispered,
"Mom said if they found the letter, the blanket would tell the rest."
