Chapter 13 - The Vote Malcolm Thought He Had Already Won.

The Ashford boardroom occupied the top floor of the company's headquarters.

By three in the afternoon, every seat was filled.

Malcolm stood at the head of the long walnut table as though the company already belonged to him.

Daniel's chair was empty.

Victoria entered alone.

Malcolm smiled.

"I'm glad you decided to behave rationally."

Victoria took her seat.

"You should enjoy the next few minutes."

Several directors avoided her eyes.

She recognized three names from the secret audit.

They had accepted payments through shell companies.

Malcolm began with a speech about stability, public confidence, and Victoria's "emotional deterioration" after an unidentified child disrupted the gala.

He described Lily as an opportunist.

He described Eleanor as legally incompetent.

He described himself as the only person capable of protecting the Ashford legacy.

Victoria let him finish.

Then she placed the original trust document on the table.

Malcolm stopped moving.

"Where did you get that?"

"Father's safe-deposit box."

The color drained from his face.

Victoria placed the audit beside it.

"We also found this."

A director near the window stood up.

"I think we should adjourn."

"Sit down," Victoria said.

He did.

Malcolm tried to recover.

"These documents may be fabricated."

The boardroom doors opened.

Eleanor rolled inside in a wheelchair.

Lily walked beside her, clean now but still holding the faded pink blanket.

The black leather handbag rested on Eleanor's lap.

No one spoke.

Malcolm stared at Eleanor as though a dead woman had entered the room.

Eleanor looked directly at him.

"You should have checked the basement more carefully."

Two board members immediately reached for their phones.

Marcus entered behind her with outside counsel and two financial investigators.

Victoria pressed a button on the conference system.

Conrad's recorded conversation filled the room.

Malcolm's own voice admitted moving the trust funds.

One director began sweating visibly.

Another started crying.

When the recording ended, Malcolm laughed once.

It was a terrible sound.

"Your father was a coward."

Eleanor's expression did not change.

"He was."

Malcolm had expected anger.

Her agreement unsettled him.

Victoria slid a folder across the table.

"This contains the transfers to every director who accepted money from your shell companies."

One man pushed the folder away without touching it.

"I didn't know where the funds came from."

"You can explain that to investigators."

Malcolm stood.

"You think this makes you powerful?"

Victoria looked at Lily.

Then at Eleanor.

"No."

She looked back at him.

"It makes your lies smaller than the truth."

The vote to remove Victoria never happened.

Instead, three directors resigned before the hour ended.

Outside counsel froze all disputed accounts.

The board suspended Malcolm pending investigation.

He walked toward the door under escort.

Then he stopped beside Lily.

His face twisted with hatred.

"Your mother should have stayed gone."

Lily stared up at him.

"You should have left her alone."

Malcolm moved suddenly.

Not toward Lily.

Toward the black handbag on Eleanor's lap.

He ripped it away and ran for the private stairwell.

Victoria shouted.

Security followed.

By the time they reached the landing, Malcolm had disappeared.

But the stairwell door leading to the underground garage was still swinging.

And inside the handbag was the one item they had not yet copied.

Conrad's original handwritten confession.
