Chapter 3: Shadows on the Horizon

The private Gulfstream jet cut silently through the midnight clouds, soaring high above the Atlantic toward Europe. Inside the luxurious cabin, the atmosphere was a stark contrast to the panic of the Carlyle Manor. Clara was fast asleep on a plush leather sofa, her breathing deep and even—a sound Arthur hadn't heard without medical assistance in years.
Leo sat by the window, staring out at the endless expanse of stars. For a boy who had spent his entire life dodging alley rats and scraping by on the gritty streets of Chicago, flying above the clouds felt like entering another dimension.
Arthur walked over, sitting in the seat opposite Leo, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. "Are you scared, Leo?"
Leo shook his head slowly. "Not really. On the streets, you learn that fear just makes you slow. But... I do wonder why this happened to me. Why can I heal people, while other kids starve or get sick?"
"That’s a question philosophers and scientists have fought over for millennia," Arthur replied softly, offering a warm, understanding smile. "Maybe there is no neat answer. But I want you to know something, Leo. From this moment on, you are safe. You will never have to worry about a cold night, an empty stomach, or someone hurting you again. You are part of our family now."
Leo looked up, surprise flickering in his eyes. "Family? But I'm just a stray..."
"You gave me my daughter back," Arthur interrupted firmly, his voice thick with emotion. "To me, that makes you more than family. It makes you a savior."
However, miles below them, thousands of feet under the ocean in a secure subterranean facility, another conversation was taking place. On a massive curved monitor screen, a high-definition enhancement of the ballroom footage played on a continuous loop. The glowing aura around Leo’s hands had been isolated, analyzed, and quantified by advanced spectral algorithms.
Dr. Silas Thorne, head of biological research for the clandestine conglomerate known as the Apex Syndicate, leaned forward, a cold, calculating smirk playing on his lips. He pushed his gold-rimmed glasses up his nose as he watched the boy's hands illuminate.
"Fascinating," Thorne whispered to the empty command center. "Cellular regeneration at a quantum level. It’s not just magic; it’s an unprecedented biological catalyst. If we can isolate that genetic marker, or extract the cellular matrix from that child, aging and disease will become obsolete. We could rewrite human evolution."

A subordinate stepped forward, tapping a clipboard. "Sir, our tracking algorithms have mapped the Carlyle family's private flight trajectory. They are heading toward the private Alpine chalet in Switzerland. Local security is minimal."
"Good," Thorne said, standing up and buttoning his immaculate gray suit. "Send the extraction unit. Use discretion, but bring the boy to me intact. The future of humanity doesn't belong to billionaires like Carlyle. It belongs to whoever controls the source of life itself."
