Chapter 9: The Price of Miracle

"Leo!" Arthur dropped his rifle, rushing over to scoop the boy into his arms. The weightlessness of the child terrified him. Leo felt as light as a fallen leaf.

Clara knelt beside them, sobbing uncontrollably as she grabbed Leo’s cold hand. "Leo, wake up! Please, you saved us! You can't leave us now!"

Leo opened his eyes slowly, the luminous brown depths dimming like dying embers. A faint, tired smile touched his lips. "I... I did it. You're safe, Clara. Your dad is here."

"You saved my daughter, Leo, but you can't save yourself by burning out your own life force," Arthur choked out, tears finally breaking free and rolling down his rugged cheeks. "Doctor! We need a medical team down here immediately! Mac, get the transport ready!"

"There's... there's no time, Mr. Carlyle," Leo whispered, his voice barely audible over the fading hum of the dying machinery around them. "My energy... it's all gone. I used it all to break the walls."

"No, no, no," Clara wept, pressing her forehead against his shoulder. "You said we're family! Families stick together!"

Arthur looked down at his hands, then at Leo. A sudden, desperate realization flashed through his mind. For years, he had possessed immense wealth, power, and influence, yet he had been utterly helpless when his daughter lost her legs. Now, holding this brave, selfless boy, he realized that love wasn't just about receiving protection—it was about giving everything in return.

Arthur took Leo’s limp hand in his own, pressing his palm firmly against the boy's chest, right over his slowing heart.

"Mr. Carlyle... what are you doing?" Mac asked, stepping back in shock from the doorway.

"I'm returning the favor," Arthur whispered fiercely.

Closing his eyes, Arthur tapped into the deep reservoir of life, will, and fierce paternal love burning inside his soul. It was a crazy, unscientific gamble—an act of pure human will. He imagined every ounce of his strength, his warmth, and his survival instinct flowing through his palm into the boy's failing body.

For a terrifying second, nothing happened. The heart monitor flatlined, emitting a continuous, chilling tone.

"Dad, no!" Clara screamed.

And then—a spark.

A warm, golden pulse echoed from Arthur’s palm, surging into Leo’s chest. The flatline stuttered, transformed, and suddenly stabilized into a strong, steady rhythm. Beep. Beep. Beep.

Leo drew a sharp, deep gasp of air, his eyes flying wide open as color rushed back into his cheeks.

Arthur slumped backward against the concrete wall, completely exhausted, his breathing heavy, but a triumphant, radiant smile stretched across his face as he watched the boy live.
