Chapter 1: The Recording

Claire didnât blink.
The soft glow of her smartphone screen reflected in her steady eyes as the red recording icon pulsed quietly. Lindaâs ragged breathing filled the kitchen, sharp and uneven after tearing the blouse apart.
For a moment, no one moved.
Then Claire spokeâcalm, precise, controlled.
âThank you.â
Linda frowned, thrown off balance. âFor what?â
Claire tilted her head slightly, her voice almost clinical. âFor making this simple.â
Ethan shifted uncomfortably in the background, but still said nothing.
Claire lowered the phone just enough to meet Lindaâs gaze directly. âDestruction of property. Verbal harassment. Intentional intimidation. All in one continuous recording.â A faint pause. âIn my home.â
Linda let out a dry laugh, though it lacked confidence. âYour home? You married into this family.â
Claireâs lips curved, not into a smileâbut into something colder. âNo, Linda. I bought this house. In full. Before I ever met Ethan.â
The silence that followed landed heavier than anything said before.
Ethan looked up.

Really looked this time.
Claire turned the phone slightly toward him, not breaking her composure. âYou might want to start paying attention.â
