Chapter 3: The Resolution

Two weeks later, the house felt lighter.
Linda was goneâremoved not with drama, but with legal efficiency. A restraining order had ensured distance. The silence she left behind was cleaner than the tension she carried.
Claire stood by the window, overlooking the Dallas skyline, her phone resting idle in her hand.
Ethan approached, slower nowâmore deliberate.
âI signed the papers,â he said quietly.
Claire didnât turn immediately. âI know.â
âI didnât fight it.â
That made her glance back.
âFor once,â he added, âI thought I should stop avoiding things.â
There was no bitterness in his voiceâjust honesty.
Claire studied him, her expression unreadable, then softenedâjust slightly.
âThatâs a start.â
Ethan nodded, accepting the distance between them without trying to close it too quickly. âIâm going to figure things out. On my own.â
Claire turned back to the window, the faintest trace of approval in her posture.
âGood.â
A long pause stretchedâbut it wasnât uncomfortable anymore.
It was quiet. Earned.
Claire finally allowed herself a small breath, deeper than before. Not relief exactlyâbut something close to closure.
Her phone buzzed softlyâanother business deal confirmed.
She silenced it.
For the first time, she didnât need to prove anything.
And as the light shifted across the room, Claire stood exactly where she belongedâ

Not in someone elseâs shadow.
But fully, undeniably, in her own.
