Chapter 1: The Recording

Claire didn’t blink.

The soft glow of her smartphone screen reflected in her steady eyes as the red recording icon pulsed quietly. Linda’s ragged breathing filled the kitchen, sharp and uneven after tearing the blouse apart.

For a moment, no one moved.

Then Claire spoke—calm, precise, controlled.

“Thank you.”

Linda frowned, thrown off balance. “For what?”

Claire tilted her head slightly, her voice almost clinical. “For making this simple.”

Ethan shifted uncomfortably in the background, but still said nothing.

Claire lowered the phone just enough to meet Linda’s gaze directly. “Destruction of property. Verbal harassment. Intentional intimidation. All in one continuous recording.” A faint pause. “In my home.”

Linda let out a dry laugh, though it lacked confidence. “Your home? You married into this family.”

Claire’s lips curved, not into a smile—but into something colder. “No, Linda. I bought this house. In full. Before I ever met Ethan.”

The silence that followed landed heavier than anything said before.

Ethan looked up.

Really looked this time.

Claire turned the phone slightly toward him, not breaking her composure. “You might want to start paying attention.”
