Chapter 2: The Shift

The next morning felt different.
The house was quieterâemptier, somehowâthough nothing had physically changed yet.
Ethan stood in the kitchen alone, staring at the marble counter where the torn blouse still lay. He picked it up, fingers brushing the fabric like it might tell him something he had ignored for too long.
Claire entered, dressed impeccably, her presence controlled as ever.
âI sent the footage to my attorney,â she said, placing her keys down with quiet precision.
Ethan swallowed. âClaire⊠I didnât know it was like this.â
She met his eyes, finally allowing a flicker of something humanâdisappointment, not anger.
âYou didnât want to know.â
He flinched.
Claire continued, her tone even. âI built everything I have from the ground up. Every contract, every investment, every risk.â A small pause. âAnd I let you believe it was yours to protect.â
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, his loosened tie now hanging uselessly. âWhat happens now?â
Claire considered him for a momentâmeasuring, weighing.
âNow,â she said, âyou decide if youâre capable of standing on your own.â
A beat.
âAnd if not⊠I already know I can.â
May you like
She turned and walked toward the door.
This time, Ethan didnât look away.
