Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead.

Margaret Carter entered the consultation room as if arriving late to a family dinner.
No one stopped her at first because no one understood what they were seeing.
She was in her seventies, graceful and silver-haired, with the same calm grey eyes Emma remembered from photographs above Grandpa Arthur's fireplace.
Those photographs had always been described as memorials.
Margaret smiled at Daniel.
"You've made this unnecessarily dramatic."
Daniel stood between her and the girls.
"Stay away from them."
Margaret's smile barely changed.
"You still confuse fear with courage."
Elena drew her weapon.
"Margaret Carter, step away from the children."
Margaret turned toward her.
Something like recognition warmed her face.
"Elena."
Elena's grip tightened.
"You know me?"
"I named you."
The words landed like stones.
Emma glanced toward Emily.
Emily had gone perfectly still.
Margaret sat in the nearest chair without permission.
"Arthur was sentimental."
"He believed blood created duty."
"I believed blood created leverage."
Daniel looked sick.
"You took my daughters."
Margaret tilted her head.
"I redistributed risk."
Emma had never hated an adult more quickly.
"We are not money."
Margaret looked at her with mild amusement.
"No, Emma."
"You are control."
Elena stepped closer.
"Why was I taken first?"
Margaret folded her hands.
"Because your birth proved Arthur's trust structure was vulnerable."
Elena's face changed.
Daniel frowned.
"What do you mean her birth?"
Margaret looked at him almost kindly.
"Elena is not your daughter."
The room went silent.
Emma looked from Daniel to Elena.
Margaret continued before anyone could speak.
"Elena is Arthur's daughter."
Daniel staggered backward.
That made Elena Emma's aunt, not her sister.
The third bracelet had been planted among the twins' records to confuse anyone tracing the bloodline.
Margaret seemed pleased by their shock.
"Arthur had an affair."
"I discovered the pregnancy before he did."
"So I made the child disappear."
Elena's eyes burned.
"You stole me from my mother."
"I saved a marriage and protected an estate."
Elena crossed the room so fast Daniel had to catch her arm.
Margaret did not flinch.
"Vanessa learned from you," Daniel said.
Margaret's expression hardened for the first time.
"Vanessa became greedy."
"There is a difference."
Emma suddenly understood something.
"That's why Vanessa was scared of the video."
Margaret looked at her.
"Vanessa was scared because she thought Arthur had found everything."
"He nearly did."
A commotion erupted in the hallway.
The officer outside shouted.
Margaret calmly checked her watch.
Daniel noticed.
"What did you do?"
The building alarms began screaming.
A mechanical voice announced an evacuation order.
Dr. Mercer entered the room at a run.
"There is smoke in the lower level."
Emma's stomach dropped.
Lower Level B held the paper files.
The bassinet.
The bracelets.
The hidden archive.
Margaret rose.
"Old buildings are terribly unsafe."
Elena aimed her pistol directly at her.
"You started that fire."
Margaret smiled.
"Can you prove it?"
Then Emily screamed from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
May you like
Vanessa stood behind her with one arm around Emily's throat and a syringe pressed against the girl's neck.
"Move," Vanessa whispered, "and the second daughter disappears for real."
