Chapter 9 - The Father Who Came Back.

Emma ran before anyone could stop her.
Her bare feet slapped against the polished hospital floor as she followed Elena toward the security wing.
Emily ran beside her.
Thomas and Dr. Mercer followed with Vale between them.
"Emma, slow down," Elena called.
Emma could not.
For two years, she had imagined her father in a thousand impossible places.
Dead in a river.
Living under another name.
Locked in a room.
Choosing not to return.
The last possibility had hurt most.
Two uniformed officers stood outside a consultation room on the first floor.
Behind the glass sat Daniel Carter.
Emma stopped so suddenly Emily collided with her shoulder.
Daniel looked older than the man in the recording.
His hair was longer.
A scar ran from his jaw to his neck.
But when he saw Emma, his face broke apart.
He stood.
Emma opened the door despite the officer's protest.
"Papa?"
Daniel dropped to his knees.
Emma crossed the room and hit him with both hands against the chest.
"You left me!"
Daniel took every blow without defending himself.
"You left me with her!"
Emma hit him again.
Then she collapsed against him.
Daniel wrapped both arms around her and began to cry silently into her hair.
Emily stood in the doorway.
Daniel looked up.
Everything inside him seemed to stop.
"Emily."
Emily did not move.
"You knew about me."
Daniel slowly stood.
"I knew you were alive."
"And you didn't come."
The words were quieter than Emma's had been, but they cut deeper.
Daniel looked at both girls.
"I tried."
Elena entered the room and closed the door.
"Tell them the rest."
Daniel stared at her.
"You're alive too."
Elena gave a bitter smile.
"Apparently that's a family habit."
Daniel sat down heavily.
He explained that two years earlier he found proof Vanessa had been moving trust money through shell charities connected to Hawthorne Children's Residence.
When he confronted her, she showed him a live video feed of Emily.
"She said if I went to police, Emily would disappear permanently."
Emily's eyes filled with fury.
"So you disappeared instead?"
"I went underground to find the people above Vanessa."
Elena leaned against the wall.
"And did you?"
Daniel looked toward the hallway.
"Yes."
Emma noticed fear in his eyes.
Not fear of Vanessa.
Something worse.
"Who started it?" Emma asked.
Daniel looked at Elena.
Then at the two girls.
"Your grandmother."
No one spoke.
Arthur Carter's wife, Margaret, had died before Emma was born.
At least that was the family story.
Daniel continued.
"Margaret Carter built the original scheme."
"She believed the trust should be controlled, not divided."
Elena's face tightened.
"Margaret died twenty years ago."
Daniel slowly shook his head.
"The woman buried under her name did."
Emma felt ice move through her veins.
A knock sounded on the consultation room door.
One of the officers opened it.
A hospital administrator stood outside beside an elegant elderly woman in a dark blue coat.
The old woman looked at Emma with gentle grey eyes.
"There you are, darling."
Daniel went white.
May you like
He whispered one word.
"Mother."
