Chapter 12 - The Trust That Vanished.

Thomas survived the injection because Dr. Mercer identified the drug before his breathing stopped completely.

Paramedics rushed him toward intensive care while police sealed the pediatric wing and placed Vanessa and Margaret under separate guard.

Emma sat between Daniel and Emily in an empty family waiting room.

No one spoke for several minutes.

The grey bunny rested in Emma's lap.

Everyone kept looking at it.

Finally, Daniel reached toward the toy.

"May I?"

Emma hesitated.

Then she handed it to him.

Daniel turned the bunny over and felt along the stitching beneath its belly.

"Arthur modified this after I disappeared."

Emma frowned.

"How do you know?"

"Because this seam wasn't here before."

Emily retrieved her own damaged rabbit from a plastic evidence bag Elena had brought upstairs.

Its belly carried the same hidden stitching.

Elena entered the waiting room carrying a laptop borrowed from hospital administration.

"Financial crimes confirmed something strange."

Daniel looked up.

"The trust?"

"Every investment account controlled by Carter Holdings was emptied between 8:02 and 8:09 this morning."

Emma remembered when she had fainted at school.

It had happened just after eight.

"Where did it go?"

Elena sat beside her.

"Into thousands of smaller accounts tied to scholarships, children's hospitals, housing programs, and protected beneficiary trusts."

Daniel stared at her.

"Arthur distributed it."

Elena nodded.

"Automatically."

"Someone triggered a dead-man protocol."

Everyone looked toward the bunny.

Daniel opened the seam carefully.

Inside was a second device no larger than a fingernail.

Not a memory card.

A hardware authentication key.

Emily opened her rabbit.

Her toy contained another.

Elena's eyes widened.

"Two keys."

Daniel shook his head.

"Arthur always required three signatures for irreversible transfers."

Emma immediately thought of the third bracelet.

"Elena."

Elena went still.

Daniel looked at her.

"If Arthur knew who you were, he may have given you the third key."

"He never gave me a rabbit."

Emma remembered the photograph of Elena's graduation.

Arthur had been holding her hand.

On Elena's wrist was a silver watch.

Emma pointed.

"Grandpa gave you that watch, didn't he?"

Elena looked down at the same old watch still strapped to her wrist.

Her face changed.

She removed it and opened the back with a coin.

A tiny metal chip sat beneath the battery cover.

Daniel laughed in disbelief.

"He split control between all three of you."

Elena connected the three devices to the laptop through a forensic adapter.

A secured Carter Foundation page opened.

Arthur appeared in a prerecorded video.

He looked older than Emma remembered and much more tired.

"If you are seeing this, then Margaret has returned."

Daniel's hand tightened around the chair.

Arthur continued.

"The fortune was never the inheritance."

"The inheritance was the evidence."

A progress bar appeared beneath his image.

UPLOAD TO FEDERAL ARCHIVE: 87%.

Elena leaned forward.

"He's sending everything out."

Arthur spoke again.

"Margaret spent decades believing money could erase history."

"So I made history impossible to erase."

The upload reached ninety-four percent.

Then the screen flashed red.

EXTERNAL INTERRUPTION DETECTED.

Elena stood.

"Someone is inside the Carter network."

Daniel looked toward the hallway where Margaret was being guarded.

"She doesn't have a computer."

Emma stared at Vanessa through the glass partition.

Vanessa was staring back.

She slowly mouthed three words.

May you like

NOT HER.

Then the entire upload vanished from the screen.
