Chapter 7 - The Third Bracelet.

The sentence seemed too impossible to enter Emma's mind all at once.
Thomas loosened his grip just enough for Dr. Vale to breathe.
"Say that again."
Vale's smile remained.
"Arthur found two bracelets because that was what we wanted him to find."
Emily backed toward Emma.
Their shoulders touched.
For the first time, the contact felt natural instead of strange.
Dr. Mercer held the vial up beneath the lamp.
"Who is we?"
Vale looked at him with contempt.
"People who understood what the Carter estate was worth before Arthur's own children understood it."
Emma felt sick.
Her grandfather's trust had always been described to her as old money from hotels, medical property, and investments.
She had never understood why adults lowered their voices when discussing it.
Vale did.
"Arthur's original trust divided control by bloodline," he continued.
"Every surviving descendant changed the voting structure."
Thomas's face darkened.
"So you hid children to manipulate ownership."
Vale laughed.
"You make it sound crude."
Emma stepped forward.
"Where is the third baby?"
Vale looked at her as though seeing Arthur Carter himself.
"Still asking the right question."
Thomas shoved him into a chair and searched his pockets.
He found a keycard, two syringes, and an old folded photograph.
The photograph showed three newborn bassinets beneath the same wooden moon plaque.
Emma could make out three bracelets.
EMMA.
EMILY.
The third name had been scratched away.
Emily touched the damaged photograph.
"Vanessa showed me this once."
Emma turned toward her.
"Why?"
"She said the third crib was empty."
Vale chuckled.
"Vanessa has always been selective with truth."
A heavy metallic clang echoed down the corridor.
Someone had entered Lower Level B.
Thomas looked at the door.
"We move now."
Vale's calm disappeared.
"If Vanessa finds us together, none of you leave this level."
Dr. Mercer stared at him.
"You work for her."
"I worked with her."
Vale's voice sharpened.
"There is a difference."
Thomas tied his wrists with plastic restraints from the medical cart.
"You can explain it to the police."
Vale shook his head.
"The police will never see the real files."
Emma remembered the dead laptop battery.
"Where are they?"
Vale looked at the stuffed bunny.
"Ask Daniel."
Emma's face tightened.
"Where is my father?"
Vale's expression shifted almost imperceptibly.
Emily saw it too.
"He knows."
Thomas grabbed Vale by the collar.
"Where is Daniel Carter?"
Vale's eyes flicked toward the wall behind the cot.
Emma followed the glance.
There was nothing there except an old mural painted with clouds.
Emily whispered, "That wall is hollow."
Thomas crossed the room and struck it with his knuckles.
A dull echo answered.
Footsteps grew louder outside.
Dr. Mercer pushed the medical cart against the door.
Thomas found a seam in the mural and forced his fingers into it.
A concealed panel opened.
Behind it was a narrow room filled with shelves of paper files.
At the center sat a hospital bassinet covered by a sheet.
Emma stepped inside.
Three plastic identification bracelets rested beneath the sheet.
The third bracelet was still readable.
Its faded ink said ELENA CARTER.
Emma's breath caught.
Emily whispered the name.
"Elena."
Then a photograph slid from beneath the bracelets.
May you like
It showed a young female police cadet holding Arthur Carter's hand at a graduation ceremony.
The same woman was standing upstairs at that very moment, wearing a detective's badge and asking hospital security where Emma had gone.
