Chapter 2 - Walking Away

Mark guided Sarah up the wooden stairs, his hand gently resting on her back.
He carried sleeping Leo against his chest, feeling the baby's steady heartbeat.
Behind them, muffled voices and footsteps echoed from the ruined dining room.
They entered their small bedroom at the end of the hallway.
Mark closed the door behind them, shutting out the noise of the house.
He walked over to the crib and gently laid Leo down on the soft mattress.
The baby stirred slightly, then fell back into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Mark turned around and saw Sarah sitting on the edge of the bed.
Her hands were shaking uncontrollably in her lap.
He walked over, pulled up a chair, and sat directly in front of her.
"Sarah," Mark whispered softly.
She kept her head down, tears finally escaping her eyes and rolling down her pale cheeks.
"I'm sorry, Mark," she sobbed quietly. "I ruined Leo's birthday."
"You didn't ruin anything," Mark said firmly, taking her cold hands into his.
He looked closely at her face under the bedroom light.
The dark bruise under her left eye stood out clearly against her pale skin.
"How did this happen, Sarah?" Mark asked, his voice tender but filled with concern.
Sarah swallowed hard and looked away.
"I was dizzy this morning from staying up with Leo," she confessed softly.
"I was trying to carry the heavy serving platters downstairs like your mother asked."
"I tripped on the bottom step and fell against the railing."
Mark felt a sharp pang of guilt in his chest.
"Why didn't you call me at work?" he asked.
"I didn't want to worry you," Sarah whispered.
"Your mother told me that if I couldn't handle house chores, I was failing as a wife."
"She said I had to earn my keep here."
Mark squeezed her hands gently, his anger toward his mother growing deeper.
"You are not failing anyone," Mark said softly. "You have been carrying too much alone."
Suddenly, the bedroom door swung open with a loud bang.
Evelyn stood in the doorway, her face red with anger.
"Are you out of your mind, Mark?" Evelyn snapped, her voice piercing the quiet room.
"You embarrassed me in front of our entire family!"
"Look at the mess downstairs!"
Mark stood up slowly, placing himself between Evelyn and Sarah.
"Leave us alone, Mother," Mark said quietly.
"Leave you alone?" Evelyn laughed bitterly.
"In my own home?"
"She has done nothing but complain and act weak since she moved in!"
"If she can't respect my rules, she can pack her things and leave!"
Mark looked his mother straight in the eye.
He did not raise his voice, but every word came out cold and clear.
"She isn't packing her things alone," Mark said.
"We are all leaving."
Evelyn froze, her eyes widening in disbelief. "What did you just say?"
"We are leaving tonight," Mark repeated calmly.
"Your control over my family ends today."
Mark turned his back on his mother and pulled a large suitcase from the closet.
Sarah looked at him in shock. "Mark... where will we go?"
"Anywhere where you and Leo are safe and respected," Mark answered softly.
May you like
He opened the suitcase and began packing their clothes.
Evelyn stood in the doorway, stunned into silence for the first time in her life.
