Chapter 9 - An Unexpected Knock

Six months went by, bringing the cool autumn rain.
Life for Mark, Sarah, and baby Leo had transformed completely.
Sarah’s bakery business had grown so much that she hired a local girl to help package orders.
Mark was now officially a junior partner at Sam’s garage, managing daily operations.
Together, they had saved a comfortable emergency fund and were planning to look for a house with a backyard for Leo.
One rainy Friday evening, the family sat around their warm living room.
Raindrops tapped softly against the windowpanes.
Leo, now nearly eighteen months old, was happily zooming a wooden toy car across the rug.
Suddenly, a hesitant knock sounded at the front door.
Mark looked at Sarah in surprise. "Are you expecting anyone?"
"No," Sarah said, picking up Leo. "It's late for visitors."
Mark walked to the door and unlocked it.
When he opened the door, his heart skipped a beat.
Standing on the porch under a wet umbrella was Evelyn.
She did not look like the arrogant woman who had driven a luxury car to the garage months ago.
Her posture was bent, her expensive clothes looked muted, and her eyes were red and weary.
"Mark..." Evelyn whispered, her voice trembling.
Mark stood firm in the doorway, but his voice was soft. "Mother. Why are you here?"
Evelyn swallowed hard, clutching her handbag tightly.
"I... I came to talk. If you'll let me," she said, her voice barely audible over the rain.
Mark looked back at Sarah.
Sarah gave him a gentle nod, showing no bitterness.
"Come inside out of the rain, Mother," Mark said, stepping aside.
Evelyn stepped into the warm apartment, leaving her wet umbrella by the door.
She looked around the cozy living room, seeing the bright, happy life her son had built without her.
Her eyes fell on baby Leo, who looked up at her with curious hazel eyes.
Tears welled up in Evelyn's eyes, spilling down her cheeks.
"I sat in that big house every night," Evelyn sobbed quietly.
"It was so silent. So cold."
She turned toward Sarah, bowing her head in genuine shame.
"Sarah... I am so sorry," Evelyn wept.
"I was cruel to you."
"I treated you terribly because I was bitter and wanted total control."
"I lost my family because of my own pride."
"I don't expect you to forgive me, but I needed to tell you I was wrong."
Sarah walked over holding Leo.
She looked at the broken, lonely woman standing before her.
"Thank you for saying that, Evelyn," Sarah said gently.
"Forgiveness takes time, but I don't hold anger toward you anymore."

"We are happy now, and we are at peace."
Evelyn looked at her grandson, a faint, tearful smile appearing on her face for the first time in years.
