Chapter 3 - Into the Night

The closet door creaked as Mark pulled down two travel bags.
Evelyn stood in the doorway, her arms crossed tight against her chest.
"You won't last a week out there," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with scorn.
"You don't have enough money for a decent apartment."
"You need this house, Mark."
Mark kept folding Sarah's sweaters and placing them into the bag.
He didn't look up at his mother.
"I needed a mother who cared about my wife," Mark said quietly.
"Instead, you treated her like unpaid help."
Sarah reached over and gently touched Mark's arm.
"Mark, are you sure about this?" she asked softly.
"We don't have anywhere permanent to go."
Mark looked at Sarah, seeing the fear in her tired eyes.
"I am completely sure," Mark said softly.
"I would rather live in a small room with peace than in a mansion with cruelty."
He zipped the bags shut and threw them over his shoulder.
Mark walked over to the crib and carefully picked up baby Leo.
The child stirred slightly, nestling his head against Mark’s neck.
Mark held Sarah’s hand tightly as they walked past Evelyn.
Evelyn didn't move, her face pale with bitter anger.
"If you walk out that door, don't come crawling back!" she called out.
Mark didn't turn around.
They walked out into the cool evening air.
The sun had set, leaving a soft purple glow across the sky.
Mark opened the trunk of his old sedan and loaded the bags inside.
He placed Leo securely into his rear-facing car seat.
Then he opened the front passenger door for Sarah.
"Get in, sweetheart," he said gently. "I'll turn on the heater."
Sarah climbed into the car and leaned her head back against the seat.
Mark got behind the wheel and turned the key in the ignition.
The engine hummed to life.
He looked back at the house through the rearview mirror one last time.
The porch light blazed brightly, but the house felt cold and empty.
Mark shifted into drive and pulled away from the curb.
They drove down the quiet suburban streets in silence.
The tension that had filled Sarah's shoulders for months began to melt away.
Tears slipped down her cheeks, but this time, they were tears of relief.
"Where are we going?" Sarah asked quietly.
"There's a quiet motel near the edge of town," Mark replied.
"It's clean, safe, and cheap."
"We'll stay there for a few days while I figure out our next step."
Mark reached across the console and took Sarah's hand in his.
"We are going to be okay, Sarah," Mark promised softly.

"I promise you, from tonight on, no one will ever hurt you again."
Sarah squeezed his hand tight, looking out at the open road ahead.
