Chapter 5 - Building a Home

Mark pulled the sedan into the driveway beside Sam's auto repair shop.

Above the quiet garage stood a cozy two-story apartment with wide glass windows.

Sunlight reflected off the clean windowpanes, welcoming them.

Sam walked out of the office, wiping his hands on a blue shop towel.

A warm, gentle smile lit up the old mechanic's face.

"Mark! Sarah! Welcome!" Sam called out, walking over to the car.

He reached through the window and gently patted baby Leo's chubby cheek.

"It's good to see you folks," Sam said warmly.

Mark stepped out of the car and shook Sam's hand firmly.

"Thank you for this, Sam," Mark said. "You have no idea what this means to us."

"Don't mention it, son," Sam replied.

He handed Mark a set of silver keys attached to a leather keychain.

"My wife Martha packed a basket of fresh groceries and some baby toys upstairs for you," Sam added.

"The place is clean, warm, and all yours."

Sarah stepped out of the car, carrying Leo in her arms.

"Thank you so much, Mr. Sam," Sarah said, her voice filled with deep gratitude.

"Call me Sam, kiddo," he smiled gently. "Go on up and make yourselves at home."

Mark carried their suitcases up the wooden staircase on the side of the building.

He unlocked the front door and pushed it open.

Warm sunlight flooded the living room.

The apartment smelled faintly of pine wood and fresh lavender.

There was a comfortable sofa, a sturdy wooden kitchen table, and two cozy bedrooms.

Sarah walked inside, looking around the bright room in awe.

"It's beautiful, Mark," Sarah whispered.

She set Leo down on a soft rug in the middle of the living room.

Leo immediately reached for a plush stuffed bear that Sam's wife had left on the floor.

Mark put the suitcases down and wrapped his arms around Sarah from behind.

"This is our home now," Mark said gently into her hair.

"No rules except ours."

"No fear."

Sarah turned around in his arms and rested her head against his chest.

For the first time in months, her body felt completely relaxed.

They spent the afternoon unpacking their clothes and putting away groceries.

Sarah cooked a simple meal of chicken and fresh vegetables in their new kitchen.

She didn't have to rush.

She didn't have to worry about pleasing an angry mother-in-law.

That evening, they sat at their own wooden table, eating together in peace.

Mark pulled a small bakery cupcake with a single pink candle out of his bag.

He lit the candle and placed it in front of baby Leo.

"Happy birthday, little guy," Mark said softly, holding Sarah's hand across the table.

Leo clapped his tiny hands and blew out the flame with a soft puff.

They laughed together, their voices filling their new home with genuine joy.
