Chapter 13 - What Adrian Never Told Her.

Claire watched the security clip three times.
The man beside Graham Pike had Adrian's height, Adrian's dark coat, and Adrian's unmistakable profile.
For twenty-four hours, Adrian had told her to trust evidence.
Now the evidence showed him walking beside the man who had planted stolen property in her locker.
Miles stared at the screen.
"That doesn't make sense."
Claire turned toward him.
"Call him."
Miles hesitated.
"Now."
Adrian arrived in the security office twelve minutes later.
Claire was standing when he entered.
She did not offer him a greeting.
Malik played the clip.
Adrian watched without interrupting.
When it ended, Claire folded her arms.
"Explain."
Adrian looked at Miles.
"Leave us."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Adrian looked back at her.
"Claire—"
"You don't get a private room for this."
Evelyn remained seated.
Malik stayed beside the console.
Miles closed the door but did not leave.
Adrian nodded once.
"Fair enough."
Claire pointed toward the frozen image.
"Why were you with Pike at four twenty-three this morning?"
"I wasn't."
"That's you."
"It looks like me."
"Don't do that."
Her voice became sharper.
"Don't become another person telling me not to believe what I can see."
Adrian stepped closer to the monitor.
"Play the last ten seconds frame by frame."
Malik did.
The image advanced slowly.
The figure beside Pike turned.
Something was wrong.
Claire leaned closer.
The man's left hand was visible for one frame.
There were no tattoos.
Adrian lifted both of his hands.
Dark ink crossed his fingers.
Miles exhaled.
"It's not him."
Claire did not feel relieved yet.
"Then someone dressed like you."
Adrian nodded.
"And made sure the camera saw his profile."
Evelyn spoke quietly.
"A deliberate impersonation."
Claire looked at Adrian.
"Who knew what coat you'd be wearing yesterday?"
He gave her a grim smile.
"Half my office."
"Who looks enough like you to fool a ceiling camera?"
Nobody answered.
Then Miles swore under his breath and stopped himself.
Claire looked at him.
"Who?"
Miles opened a staff directory on his phone.
He showed them a photograph.
A man named Colin Mercer stared back.
He was Vale Hospitality's regional operations director.
Dark hair.
Similar build.
Similar age.
Claire remembered seeing him briefly during executive visits.
Adrian's jaw tightened.
"Colin worked with Pike years ago."
Claire remembered something else from the first evening in suite 1804.
Adrian had recognized Pike's name without needing anyone to explain it.
At the time, she had assumed that was because powerful executives knew the same consultants.
Now the omission felt deliberate.
She turned to Evelyn.
"Did you know?"
Evelyn shook her head.
"No."
"Miles?"
Miles hesitated.
"I knew Pike had crossed Adrian's path years ago. I didn't know Adrian had hired him."
Claire looked at Adrian again.
For the first time since the lobby confrontation, she saw him without the advantage of mystery.
He was not simply the calm man in the leather chair who always seemed to know one fact more than everyone else.
He was capable of fear, calculation, and self-protection too.
That did not make him the same as Martin Hale.
But pretending the difference made him flawless would be another kind of lie.
Claire had no interest in replacing one convenient story with another.
She wanted the whole truth, including the pieces that made her allies uncomfortable.
Claire turned slowly.
"You knew Pike?"
The room went silent.
Adrian did not dodge the question.
"Yes."
Claire laughed once without humor.
"You left that part out."
"I did."
"Why?"
"Because twelve years ago, I hired him."
Claire stared at him.
Adrian continued.
"My company had a labor dispute at one of our first properties. Pike promised he could control the narrative."
Evelyn looked at him sharply.
"You never told me this."
"I fired him after forty-eight hours."
Claire did not care about the timeline yet.
"What did he do?"
Adrian's voice lowered.
"He proposed digging through employee records for personal pressure points."
The room became very quiet.
Claire looked toward the file from suite 1804 in her mind.
Her father's bills.
Olivia's family information.
The same method.
"So he learned this working for you."
"No."
Adrian's answer was firm.
"He brought it to me. I rejected it."
"But you knew exactly what kind of man he was when we found his name."
"Yes."
"And you didn't tell me."
"No."
Claire stepped closer.
"Why?"
Adrian finally looked less like a chairman and more like a man who knew he had made a mistake.
"Because I knew Martin would use the old connection to claim I orchestrated this."
Claire's anger rose.
"So you protected your position."
"I thought I was protecting the investigation."
"Those are not the same thing."
Adrian said nothing.
Claire pointed toward the monitor.
"This is what happens when everybody decides which truth is convenient enough to share."
Evelyn nodded slowly.
"She's right."
Adrian looked at Claire.
"Yes. She is."
Claire had expected resistance.
His agreement made the moment heavier.
Miles's phone rang.
He answered.
"Miles."
He listened.
Then his expression hardened.
"Lock his access immediately."
Adrian looked at him.
"Colin?"
Miles nodded.
"He just tried to enter Vale headquarters with Natalie's old credential."
Evelyn stood.
"Where is he now?"
"Security stopped him in the lobby."
Adrian turned toward the door.
Claire stopped him.
"Before you go, one thing."
He looked back.
"From now on, I hear everything that involves my name."
"Agreed."
"Not the version that helps your company."
"Everything."
Claire held his gaze.
"Good."
Then Malik spoke from the computer.
"You all need to see this."
He had enlarged the footage of fake-Adrian leaving with Pike.
In the polished loading-dock door, a reflection showed a third person waiting beside a car.
May you like
Claire recognized him instantly.
Trevor Hale.
