Chapter 3 - A Job Worth Losing.

By noon, the Bellmont Grand looked exactly as it had before the confrontation.

Guests checked in beneath the chandeliers.

A pianist played softly near the lounge.

Coffee cups touched saucers.

Nothing in the lobby suggested that four floors above it, an acquisition worth hundreds of millions of dollars was beginning to fracture.

Claire sat in a private conference room beside Marissa Lane.

Adrian stood at the windows.

Dennis Crowe had been removed from the room by corporate security ten minutes earlier.

Trevor Hale had disappeared from the lobby.

Claire did not find that comforting.

Marissa replayed the accidental recording through headphones.

"The audio is clear enough to identify both voices."

Adrian turned from the window.

"Send a protected copy to outside counsel."

Marissa hesitated.

"I don't report to you yet."

"Then send it to Bellmont's counsel."

"The general counsel is Martin Hale's college roommate."

Adrian's expression changed for the first time.

Not much.

Just enough.

"Then send it to the audit committee."

Claire looked between them.

"Can someone explain what I walked into?"

Marissa removed the headphones.

"Vale Hospitality wants controlling interest in this hotel group."

"I know that part."

"Martin Hale doesn't want the sale unless his family keeps operational control."

Adrian spoke calmly.

"I refused."

Claire nodded toward the phone.

"So Trevor and Dennis were planning some kind of distraction?"

"Possibly."

"And he grabbed me because of that?"

Adrian shook his head.

"I don't think the grab was planned."

Claire almost laughed.

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No."

His answer was immediate.

"It means his behavior created a problem they weren't prepared for."

Marissa leaned forward.

"Claire, you should understand that Trevor may file a complaint against you."

"For defending myself?"

"He can make allegations."

"The lobby cameras show what happened."

Adrian glanced at her.

"Assuming the backup survives."

Claire's phone buzzed again.

This time the message was not anonymous.

It was from her younger brother, Noah.

DAD'S PHARMACY CALLED AGAIN. CAN YOU COVER THE BALANCE THIS WEEK?

Claire closed her eyes for half a second.

She had thirty-eight dollars until payday.

Her father had been recovering from a workplace accident for months, and the bills had turned every financial decision into arithmetic performed at midnight.

Losing this job was not an inconvenience.

It was a disaster.

Marissa seemed to read the fear on her face.

"You can take paid administrative leave while we investigate."

Claire looked up.

"Does that mean I'm suspended?"

"Technically, yes."

"For being grabbed?"

Marissa's voice softened.

"For a physical incident involving a guest."

Claire pushed back her chair.

"Then call it what it is."

Adrian watched her.

"And what is that?"

"A company protecting money before people."

Marissa looked down.

Adrian did not.

Claire stood.

"You all watched what happened."

"I did."

"Then why am I the one going home?"

Adrian walked to the table.

"Because if I override procedure right now, Hale's attorneys will argue that I manipulated an internal investigation before the acquisition vote."

Claire gave him a bitter smile.

"Convenient."

"No. Necessary."

"Those words usually sound the same when you're the person getting sent home."

Adrian did not defend himself.

That annoyed her more than an argument would have.

Marissa slid an envelope across the table.

"Your leave is paid."

Claire did not touch it.

A knock came at the door.

One of Adrian's bodyguards entered.

His name, Claire had learned, was Miles.

He handed Adrian a phone.

"You need to see this."

Adrian read the screen.

His jaw tightened.

"How long ago?"

"Three minutes."

Claire folded her arms.

"What happened?"

Adrian turned the phone toward her.

A social media post showed a blurry photograph of Trevor on the lobby floor.

The caption read: HOTEL EMPLOYEE ATTACKS GUEST DURING BREAKFAST RUSH.

It had already been shared hundreds of times.

Claire felt cold.

"There's no video."

Miles shook his head.

"Only the image."

Marissa stared at the post.

"Who took that photograph?"

Another message appeared beneath it.

A statement from a newly created account claimed that Claire had become aggressive after Trevor complained about service.

The lie was detailed enough to sound rehearsed.

Adrian handed the phone back to Miles.

"Find the original upload."

Miles nodded and left.

Claire sat again because her legs had suddenly become unreliable.

"They're making me the story."

Adrian looked at her.

"Yes."

"And if people believe it?"

"Some will."

The blunt answer hurt.

Claire picked up the envelope containing her suspension papers.

"So I lose my job, my name gets dragged through the internet, and Trevor gets to go home."

"Not if we prove what happened."

She looked directly at Adrian.

"You mean if the proof doesn't disappear first."

Adrian's phone rang.

He answered without taking his eyes off her.

"Vale."

He listened for ten seconds.

Then his expression hardened.

"Lock the server room."

Claire stood again.

"What now?"

Adrian ended the call.

"The off-site backup isn't there."

Marissa went completely still.

Claire's voice dropped.

"You said it was protected."

"It should have been."

"So now it's my word against his?"

Adrian looked toward the closed conference-room door.

"Not exactly."

"Why?"

May you like

He turned back to her.

"Because whoever deleted it just proved they have access far above Dennis Crowe."
