Chapter 5 - The Man Above Dennis.

Claire returned to the Bellmont Grand before sunset.

She told herself she came back because of the recording and the photograph.

The truth was less comfortable.

Someone had dragged her into a fight she did not understand, and going home had not made her safer.

Miles brought her through a private entrance and directly to the executive floor.

Adrian waited in a conference room with Marissa and a gray-haired attorney named Evelyn Shaw.

Dennis Crowe sat at the far end of the table with another attorney beside him.

His company badge had been removed.

Claire remained near the door.

Dennis looked at her as if she had personally destroyed his career.

"There she is."

Adrian's voice stayed calm.

"Don't speak to her."

Dennis laughed bitterly.

"You think she's innocent?"

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Innocent of what?"

Evelyn raised a hand.

"Mr. Crowe, you requested an opportunity to explain why you accessed the security archive."

Dennis leaned back.

"I was told to."

Marissa looked at him.

"By whom?"

Dennis glanced at Adrian.

"You already know."

"Say it."

Dennis swallowed.

"Martin Hale."

Claire felt the room change.

Trevor's father was not just an investor.

Martin Hale was chairman of the Bellmont board.

Adrian's acquisition needed his cooperation or enough votes to remove him.

Evelyn placed a recorder on the table.

"Why did Mr. Hale instruct you to access the archive?"

Dennis looked at Claire.

"Because they expected something to happen."

Claire stepped forward.

"Expected what?"

"A scene."

Adrian's eyes hardened.

Dennis continued.

"Trevor was supposed to provoke a complaint against hotel staff."

Claire stared at him.

"Which employee?"

Dennis looked down.

"Not you specifically."

That answer made her angrier than if he had said her name.

"So any of us would have worked."

"They wanted a disruption before the board meeting."

Evelyn asked the next question.

"Why?"

Dennis rubbed both hands over his face.

"Because Martin planned to argue that Bellmont's operations were unstable and that Vale Hospitality's transition team had already created chaos."

Adrian gave a humorless smile.

"My transition team hasn't taken control yet."

"Facts weren't the point."

Claire remembered Trevor pulling her wrist.

"Was he supposed to grab someone?"

"No."

Dennis shook his head quickly.

"He was supposed to complain loudly, create an argument, maybe demand a manager."

"He made his own choice."

Dennis nodded.

"Yes."

Claire looked at Adrian.

"And then I made mine."

Dennis leaned forward.

"You made everything worse."

Adrian's palm came down softly on the table.

The sound was quiet.

Everyone stopped anyway.

"She did not make anything worse."

Dennis looked at him.

"If she'd just walked away—"

"She tried."

Adrian's voice became colder.

"Your people created the situation. Trevor escalated it. She ended it."

Claire noticed the word your.

"Your people?"

Dennis closed his mouth.

Evelyn turned toward him.

"Who else was involved?"

He shook his head.

"I'm done talking."

Adrian leaned back.

"You weren't carrying that laptop because you were done talking."

Dennis stared at him.

"I was protecting myself."

"From Martin?"

No answer.

"From Trevor?"

Still no answer.

Evelyn asked Dennis to identify the folders on the table one by one.

He refused at first.

Then Adrian reminded him that refusing to answer would not make the photographs disappear.

Dennis finally pointed to the red markings.

"Those were risk categories."

Claire looked at him.

"Risk to who?"

"To the plan."

"People aren't categories."

Dennis rubbed his temples.

"I know that now."

Claire shook her head.

"You knew it yesterday. You just decided the plan mattered more."

Marissa turned to Dennis.

"Were employee records pulled with your credentials?"

He nodded.

"Yes."

"Did you give those records to Pike?"

Dennis looked toward his attorney.

The attorney whispered something.

Dennis answered anyway.

"I gave him access to a temporary export."

Claire felt disgust twist through her.

"That export included my father's information."

Dennis looked down.

"I didn't know Trevor would use it."

"You gave strangers the weapon and now you're surprised somebody swung it."

Adrian's eyes moved toward Claire.

He did not interrupt.

Dennis tried one last defense.

"I thought this was corporate pressure, not personal."

Claire leaned forward.

"Corporate pressure is personal when the person losing sleep over it earns nineteen dollars an hour."

Nobody in the room answered.

For the first time, Dennis seemed to understand that the people in his spreadsheet had lives outside the cells.

Claire did not care whether he felt guilty.

She cared whether he finally told the truth.

Her phone vibrated.

Every face in the room turned toward her.

She took it out.

Another anonymous message.

ASK DENNIS ABOUT SUITE 1804.

Claire read it aloud.

Dennis pushed his chair backward so quickly it struck the wall.

Marissa stared at him.

"What's in suite 1804?"

Dennis looked genuinely frightened now.

"Nothing."

Adrian stood.

"Miles."

The bodyguard opened the door immediately.

"Take two people upstairs."

Dennis rose.

"Don't."

Adrian looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if Martin finds out I told you—"

"You haven't told us anything about the suite."

Dennis's breathing quickened.

Claire understood before anyone said it.

His reaction was the answer.

Adrian walked toward the door.

"Claire, stay here."

She folded her arms.

"That worked well the last time someone told me what to do."

For the first time all day, Adrian almost smiled.

"Fine. Stay behind Miles."

They took the private elevator to the eighteenth floor.

Suite 1804 was at the end of a silent corridor.

Miles used an executive override card.

The light on the lock turned green.

He opened the door slowly.

The suite looked empty.

No luggage.

No clothes.

No guest.

Then Claire noticed the dining table.

Stacks of printed employee files covered it.

Her own photograph was on top.

Beside it was a list of names from the hotel staff.

Some were marked in red.

Some were crossed out.

Claire moved closer.

Her name had been circled twice.

May you like

Under it, someone had handwritten four words.

SHE SAW HIM ARRIVE.
