Chapter 7 - The Story They Wanted Her to Tell.

Claire slept for three hours that night.

At six the next morning, her name was trending locally for reasons she never wanted.

The first article repeated Trevor's claim that a hotel employee had "overreacted" during a service dispute.

A second article quoted an unnamed witness who said Claire had appeared angry before the incident.

Claire knew the witness did not exist.

Her phone rang while she was making coffee for her father.

It was an unknown number.

She almost ignored it.

Then she thought of Olivia.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman whispered.

"Claire?"

Claire straightened.

"Olivia?"

"Don't say my name."

"Where are you?"

"I'm safe."

"What happened?"

"I saw Dennis take a briefcase from that man yesterday."

Claire lowered her voice.

"Graham Pike."

The line went silent.

"How do you know his name?"

"We found files in a suite. Yours was there."

Olivia inhaled sharply.

"Then they know."

"Know what?"

"I copied something."

Claire gripped the phone harder.

"The memory card?"

"No. That card was a decoy."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"Olivia, where are you?"

"I can't tell you."

"Then tell me what you copied."

A door closed somewhere on Olivia's end.

Her voice dropped further.

"A spreadsheet from Dennis's laptop."

"What was on it?"

"Payments."

"To who?"

"Employees. Vendors. A local media consultant. Maybe more."

Claire thought about the anonymous messages.

"Were you the one texting me?"

Olivia hesitated.

That was enough.

"You warned me about the camera footage."

"I saw Dennis enter security right after Trevor hit the floor."

"Why didn't you come forward?"

"Because I saw my name on Dennis's screen before he noticed me."

Claire sat down at the kitchen table.

Her father was still asleep in the next room.

"Send the spreadsheet to Adrian Vale."

Olivia's response came instantly.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because someone inside his team is feeding information back to Hale."

Claire felt the room become very quiet.

"How do you know?"

"The spreadsheet includes a payment labeled V CONSULT."

"That could mean anything."

"It includes the phone number that received the payment notice."

"Whose number?"

Olivia paused.

"I don't know yet."

A knock sounded at Claire's front door.

She froze.

Olivia whispered quickly.

"Don't trust anyone just because they protected you in the lobby."

The call ended.

Claire walked to the door and looked through the peephole.

Adrian Vale stood in the hallway holding two paper coffee cups.

No bodyguards were visible.

Claire did not open the door immediately.

"What do you want?"

Adrian looked directly at the peephole as though he knew exactly where her eye was.

"Five minutes."

"Why are you at my apartment?"

"Because your attorney hasn't returned my calls."

Claire opened the door two inches.

"I don't have an attorney."

"You do now."

"I can't afford one."

"You don't have to."

Claire almost shut the door.

"Then I definitely don't want yours."

Adrian lifted one coffee cup.

"Can I at least give you this before you reject everything else?"

Despite herself, Claire opened the door.

He handed her the coffee.

It was exactly how she drank it at work.

"How did you know?"

"You make three hundred cups a day. Someone eventually notices yours."

Claire wondered if that answer should reassure her.

It did not.

Adrian remained in the hallway.

"Trevor is holding a press conference at ten."

"Of course he is."

"He plans to apologize for what he calls a misunderstanding."

Claire stared at him.

"That sounds almost reasonable."

"Then he'll announce that he won't pursue charges if you apologize too."

Claire laughed once.

"There it is."

"He wants you to validate his version."

"What do you want?"

"Nothing from you today."

"Everyone wants something."

Adrian studied her.

"Fine. I want you not to react publicly until we understand who is moving the pieces."

Claire remembered Olivia's warning.

"Who on your team knew you were coming here?"

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

"Why?"

"Answer me."

"Miles. Evelyn. My assistant."

"Anyone else?"

"No."

Claire's phone buzzed.

A news alert appeared.

Trevor Hale had moved his press conference forward.

It was starting now.

Claire opened the live stream.

Trevor stood behind microphones outside the Bellmont Grand.

His expression was carefully solemn.

"Yesterday, I experienced an unfortunate incident with a hotel employee."

Claire's jaw tightened.

Then Trevor said something neither she nor Adrian expected.

"I have learned that Ms. Claire Bennett was acting under instructions from Adrian Vale's security team."

Adrian went completely still.

Trevor continued.

"I believe this incident was staged to influence tomorrow's board vote."

Claire looked at Adrian.

"He just accused you of setting me up."

Adrian's phone began ringing.

Then Claire's did too.

On the live stream, Trevor lifted a printed document.

"And I have written proof."
