CHAPTER 1: THE TRUTH UNDER THE BLANKET

I couldn’t breathe.
Dark bruises wrapped around Megan’s legs—deep, angry shades of purple and yellow, like something had been gripping her over and over again. Her ankles were swollen beyond anything I’d ever seen. There were marks on her thighs… fingerprints.
My stomach dropped.
“This… this isn’t from pregnancy,” I whispered.
Megan covered her face, sobbing.
Behind me, my mother gasped—but it sounded forced. Too late. Too controlled.
“Jake, I don’t know what this is—”
“Stop.” My voice cracked, but it cut through the room like glass. “Just stop talking.”
I looked back at Megan. “Who did this to you?”
She shook her head, trembling.
But her eyes… they flickered.
