CHAPTER 3: BREAKING THE SILENCE

That night, I didn’t sleep.
I sat beside Megan, holding her hand as she drifted in and out, exhausted from weeks of fear and pain.
“I’m so sorry,” I whispered again and again.
She shook her head weakly. “I thought I was protecting you… from losing your mother.”
I swallowed hard. “You were protecting me from the truth.”
The next morning, I made a call.
Then another.
By noon, a doctor confirmed what I feared—Megan’s injuries were not accidental. Stress levels were dangerously high. The baby… was at risk.
By evening, there was a knock at the door.
My mother opened it with confidence.
She didn’t have that confidence when she saw who was standing there.
Two officers.
“Ma’am,” one said calmly, “we need to ask you a few questions.”
