Chapter 1 - Smoke Between Floors.

.The first thing Emily Carter remembered was the sound of the elevator screaming.

Metal shrieked somewhere above her as the car dropped half a floor and slammed to a stop hard enough to throw everyone against the mirrored walls.

The emergency lights blinked once, then died.

For three terrifying seconds, there was nothing but darkness, the smell of burning plastic, and the violent pounding of Emily's own heart.

Then a dull red glow seeped through the seam of the doors.

Smoke curled down from the ceiling vent.

Emily pressed both hands around the curve of her eight-month pregnant belly.

Her baby had been kicking only minutes earlier.

Now there was no movement at all.

Across the floor, a young brunette woman in a white coat groaned and tried to lift her head.

Blood ran from a scrape above her eyebrow and traced a thin line along her temple.

Her black heel had snapped beneath her when the elevator lurched.

Emily crawled toward her despite the sharp pain twisting low across her abdomen.

"Can you hear me?"

The woman opened glassy brown eyes.

"The fire," she whispered.

Emily swallowed against the smoke burning her throat.

"Help is coming."

She did not know if that was true.

The alarm beyond the elevator doors had stopped sounding almost as soon as it began.

That silence frightened her more than the smoke.

She hit the emergency call button again.

Nothing happened.

The brunette grabbed Emily's wrist with surprising strength.

"Don't let them take my bag."

Emily glanced toward a slim leather satchel lying beneath the control panel.

"Who?"

The woman tried to answer, but a coughing fit bent her forward.

Then the elevator doors shuddered.

A steel tool punched through the gap.

The doors were forced apart inch by inch as smoke and flashing red and blue light poured into the car.

Emily had never been so relieved to see a firefighter in her life.

Then she saw his face.

"Alex!"

Her husband looked directly at her.

For one instant, the discipline in his expression cracked.

His eyes dropped to her belly, then to the blood beneath the brunette woman's hair.

"Emily, stay where you are."

His voice was steady, but she knew him well enough to hear fear beneath it.

A second firefighter shouted from the lobby.

"Carter, we have fire on six and smoke pushing into the shaft."

Alex stepped into the elevator.

Emily reached for him.

The brunette suddenly gasped and collapsed sideways.

Alex caught her before her head struck the floor.

He checked her pulse, then looked over his shoulder.

"She's altered and bleeding."

"Alex," Emily said again.

This time his eyes met hers.

"I'm coming back for you."

He slid one arm behind the brunette's shoulders and the other beneath her knees.

Emily stared at him in disbelief.

"You're leaving?"

"I have to move her now."

"Alex, I'm pregnant."

The words came out sharper than she intended.

He flinched.

"I know."

The brunette stirred in his arms and cried one strange word through the haze.

"Fairy!"

No one answered her.

Alex carried her toward the open doors.

Emily's panic exploded.

"Alex!"

He turned halfway back.

"Ben is right behind me."

Then he disappeared into the flashing emergency lights with another woman in his arms.

The sight lodged inside Emily like broken glass.

A fresh contraction seized her before she could call after him.

She doubled over, clutching her belly.

Warmth spread beneath her dress.

For one horrible second she thought her water had broken.

Then she looked down and saw blood.

"No."

Her voice was barely audible.

"No, no, no."

A firefighter with light brown hair rushed into the elevator and dropped to his knees beside her.

A stethoscope hung over his navy shirt beneath his turnout coat.

"Ma'am, stay with me."

Emily tried to breathe, but every breath shook.

"My husband just left."

"I'm Ben Hayes, fire medic."

He pulled off one glove, pressed two fingers to her wrist, then immediately replaced the glove as another wave of smoke rolled through the open doorway.

"Emily, look at me."

She stared at the firefighter's face, but all she could see was Alex carrying the brunette away.

"My baby isn't moving."

Ben's expression changed.

He keyed his radio.

"Medic to command, I have a pregnant female, approximately thirty-two weeks, abdominal pain and active bleeding. I need a litter at elevator three now."

Static answered him.

Emily began crying harder.

Her left hand trembled against her belly.

The diamond on her ring flashed under the emergency light.

She twisted it once, then pulled it from her swollen finger.

Ben looked down in confusion.

Emily pressed the ring into his thick gloved palm.

"Give this to Alex."

"You're going to give it to him yourself."

She closed his fingers around it.

"Please."

Ben's jaw tightened.

"Emily, don't talk like that."

Another contraction ripped through her.

She cried out and leaned her head against the cold metal wall.

"My baby and I won't be..."

The sentence died in her throat when the elevator lights suddenly came back on.

For a split second, every button on the panel glowed.

Then the display changed from the number five to a single word.

LOCKED.

Ben stared at it.

Emily heard a heavy metallic clunk above them.

The elevator doors began closing again.

And from somewhere in the smoke-filled lobby, a man shouted, "Do not let that car move!"
