Chapter 9 - What Daniel Saw.

Ben wanted to believe the photograph was altered.
Ortiz had it checked immediately.
It was not.
Daniel Hayes had been inside the elevator.
The question was when.
The reflection showed him crouched low behind an open service panel, which meant the image had likely been taken before the firefighters forced the doors fully apart.
Emily remembered no fourth person in the elevator.
Claire did not either.
Then Alex noticed something everyone else missed.
"Look at the timestamp."
The photograph had been taken at 8:42:11 p.m.
Fire dispatch records showed Alex reached the elevator at 8:47.
The image could not depict the rescue if the timestamp was accurate.
Ortiz enlarged the file metadata.
"Clock could be wrong."
Alex shook his head.
"Or this image was staged."
Emily looked at the picture again.
The scene was nearly identical to what she remembered, but one detail was wrong.
Her cardigan sleeve was clean.
During the real elevator fall, she had torn it on a broken metal edge and smeared blood along the cuff.
In the photograph, there was no tear.
"This happened before the elevator dropped."
Ortiz looked at her.
Emily pointed.
"My sleeve."
Ben understood first.
"Daniel took a rehearsal photo."
The room went silent.
Someone had arranged the scene before the real emergency.
That meant the image in the envelope was not surveillance.
It was planning material.
Claire began shaking.
"They knew exactly where each of us would be."
Emily looked at Alex.
"Except me."
Alex's expression changed.
"You weren't part of the plan."
"Then why am I in the photograph?"
No one answered.
Emily's surprise dinner had not been announced.
She had told only one person where she was going that evening.
Her older sister, Rachel.
Emily immediately called her.
No answer.
She tried again.
Still nothing.
"Rachel always answers me."
Alex's concern deepened.
"When did you last speak?"
"Before I left home."
Ortiz requested a welfare check.
Officers arrived at Rachel's apartment eighteen minutes later.
The door was locked.
Her car was gone.
Inside, there were no signs of a struggle.
But her laptop sat open on the dining table.
The browser history showed a search for Vale River Tower restaurant reservations.
Another tab contained an email from an unknown address.
The subject line read: YOUR SISTER'S HUSBAND IS LYING TO HER.
Emily felt sick.
The email had been sent the previous afternoon.
It claimed Alex was meeting another woman at the restaurant and included the exact time and table number.
Rachel had forwarded it to Emily with one sentence.
Maybe you should surprise him and find out the truth yourself.
Emily remembered reading it at work.
She had assumed Rachel discovered the information through a mutual friend.
She had never asked where it came from.
"They wanted me there."
Her voice sounded distant.
Alex sat beside her.
"Yes."
"They used me to make you look guilty."
Ortiz nodded slowly.
"And possibly to create leverage."
Emily looked at the staged photograph.
It showed exactly the story any outsider would believe.
A firefighter husband carrying another woman to safety while abandoning his pregnant wife.
"Why?"
Claire answered.
"Because Alex had a reputation they couldn't attack with money."
She looked at him.
"But they could destroy him with a picture."
A public scandal would discredit Alex before he could testify about the records.
If Emily and Grace had died, the image would be even more powerful.
It would make Alex appear monstrous.
And grief might make him easier to silence.
The thought made Emily's hands shake.
"Where is Rachel?"
Ortiz's phone rang before anyone could speculate.
She listened for less than thirty seconds.
"Her vehicle was located in a parking garage two blocks from the Vale building."
Emily stood despite the pain.
"Is she there?"
Ortiz hesitated.
"No."
"Then where is she?"
"We don't know yet."
Ben's phone buzzed again.
This time the message came from Daniel's number.
There was no text.
Only an audio attachment.
Ben pressed play.
Daniel's voice came through in a terrified whisper.
"Ben, I didn't sabotage the elevator."
A metallic banging sounded in the background.
"Reed made me remove the camera. He said it was part of a federal investigation. I believed him until I saw the woman in pink arrive."
Emily stopped breathing.
Daniel continued.
"I tried to warn her, but Reed was watching the lobby. I hid in the service space before the car locked."
Ben gripped the phone.
"Where are you?"
The recording continued.
"I saw who triggered the override."
There was a pause.
"It wasn't Reed."
Alex looked at Ortiz.
Daniel's breathing became ragged.
"The person who locked that elevator was—"
A loud impact cut him off.
