Chapter 10 - The Name Behind the Door.

The missing name became more dangerous than any name they already had.
If Reed had not triggered the elevator override, then someone else inside the operation had direct access to the Vale control system.
Victor Vale was an obvious possibility.
Claire rejected it immediately.
"Victor doesn't touch machinery himself."
Emily glared at her.
"You say that like you know him well."
Claire hesitated.
"I worked in his executive compliance office for four years."
"You worked for him directly?"
"For his general counsel."
Alex stared at Claire.
"You told me you were a building safety analyst."
"I was transferred after I started asking questions."
"Another detail you forgot to mention."
Claire's eyes flashed.
"You want to lecture me about secrets?"
Emily almost laughed at the bitter symmetry.
Ortiz raised one hand.
"Everyone can hate each other later. Right now I need facts."
Claire explained that Vale used a private facilities command center beneath River Tower.
Authorized executives could remotely control elevators, access doors, ventilation, and alarms.
"How many people had access?"
"Six."
"Names."
Claire listed Victor Vale, two vice presidents, the building security director, the chief engineer, and herself.
Alex looked at her sharply.
"You could have locked the elevator."
"Yes."
The admission chilled the room.
"Did you?"
"No."
Emily watched Claire carefully.
"Can you prove it?"
Claire nodded.
"Every command generates a user log unless someone wipes the server."
Ortiz stood.
"Where is the server?"
"Basement level three."
The damaged building was still under fire department control, but investigators had cleared the lower levels.
Ortiz obtained access and took Alex and Ben with her because both understood the building systems.
Emily was ordered to remain at the hospital.
She hated it.
She hated the word remain.
It felt too much like being left on the elevator floor again.
Alex crouched beside her wheelchair before leaving.
"I need to go."
Emily's first instinct was to punish him with silence.
Instead, she asked, "Are you coming back?"
"Yes."
"Don't promise me because it sounds good."
He took the ring from the chain around his neck and placed it in her hand.
"Then keep this until I do."
Emily closed her fingers around it.
It was the first promise she believed.
At River Tower, the basement smelled of wet concrete and smoke.
Ortiz's team entered the command center at 4:18 p.m.
The server racks were still running on backup power.
Ben located the elevator control terminal.
The user history had been deleted.
"Of course," he muttered.
Alex examined the hardware.
"Can it be recovered?"
A digital forensics technician nodded.
"Maybe."
Then Ben noticed a maintenance cabinet hanging open.
Inside was a portable override console identical to the units his brother serviced.
One cable was missing.
"Daniel would carry that cable."
Ortiz looked at him.
"So would anyone from his company."
Ben found dried blood on the cabinet handle.
The lab would need to confirm whose it was.
Alex moved toward the service corridor.
A soft sound stopped him.
Three taps.
Pause.
Three taps.
Ben heard it too.
"That's coming from behind the wall."
They followed the sound to a freight elevator machine room.
The door was locked from the outside.
Ortiz forced it open.
Daniel Hayes lay on the floor with his wrists zip-tied and blood matted in his hair.
Ben dropped beside him.
"Daniel!"
Daniel opened one eye.
"Took you long enough."
Ben laughed once in relief and anger.
"Who did this?"
Daniel tried to sit.
"Reed found me after I sent the first message."
Alex leaned closer.
"You said Reed didn't lock the elevator."
"He didn't."
"Who did?"
Daniel looked toward Ortiz.
"You have to get me out first."
"Tell us now."
"Because if she's still in the hospital, Emily isn't safe."
Alex's blood went cold.
"She?"
Daniel nodded.
"The person who triggered the override was a woman."
Ben cut the zip ties.
"Who?"
Daniel looked directly at Alex.
"Your wife's sister."
At St. Matthew, Emily's phone began ringing.
Rachel's name appeared on the screen.
Emily answered instantly.
"Rachel?"
Her sister was crying.
"Emily, I'm so sorry."
"Where are you?"
"I didn't know they were going to hurt you."
Emily's hand tightened around the phone.
"What did you do?"
Rachel whispered, "I only pushed the button because they said it would stop Alex from leaving with her."
Emily felt the floor disappear beneath her again.
"What button?"
Rachel sobbed.
"The elevator override."
Then another voice entered the call.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Polished.
Familiar from the recording.

Victor Vale said, "Mrs. Carter, I think it's time you and I finally met."
