Chapter 1: The Wedding That Stopped

The music faltered.

It wasn’t immediate—just a slight hesitation in the violin, a wavering note that caught the attention of a few guests. Then silence followed like a ripple spreading across the lawn.

All eyes turned.

I stepped forward, Ellie in my arms, her face buried against my neck.

Vanessa stood beneath the rose arch, radiant in white, her smile frozen as confusion flickered across her face.

“Daniel?” she called, her voice light but strained. “What’s going on?”

I didn’t answer right away.

I walked slowly down the aisle—not as a groom approaching his bride, but as a father holding his child.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

When I reached the front, I looked at her.

Really looked.

And suddenly, I saw something I hadn’t noticed before—something cold beneath the charm.

“Did you lock my daughter in the bathroom?” I asked.

Gasps rippled through the crowd.

Vanessa blinked, clearly caught off guard.

“What?” she laughed softly. “Of course not—Daniel, what are you talking about?”

Ellie tightened her grip around me.

“She told me,” I said quietly.

Vanessa’s smile stiffened.

“She misunderstood—”

“No,” I cut her off, my voice firm. “She didn’t.”

Silence fell again.

This time, it felt heavier.

“Did you tell her she had to stay hidden until you became Mrs. Callahan?”

Vanessa’s eyes flickered—just for a second.

That was all I needed.

“I was just trying to keep things calm,” she said quickly. “She was getting overwhelmed—”

“She was locked in a room,” I said. “Alone. Crying.”

“That’s not what happened—”

“Then explain it.”

She hesitated.

And in that hesitation, everything broke.
