Vanessa’s composure began to crack.
“You don’t understand,” she said, her voice tightening. “I’ve been patient. I’ve been respectful. But everything is always about Ellie.”
A murmur spread through the guests.
“She’s a child,” I said, stunned.
“And I’m your future,” Vanessa snapped. “Or at least I was supposed to be.”
Ellie whimpered softly.
I held her closer.
“You told her she wasn’t important anymore.”
“I said things would change,” Vanessa corrected, her tone defensive. “Because they should. A marriage needs space to grow. It can’t revolve around a child forever.”
Something inside me went cold.
“She’s not something to ‘make space’ around,” I said. “She’s my daughter.”
“And I was supposed to be your wife.”
“Not at her expense.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You’re still living in the past, Daniel. Still clinging to a ghost and a child who controls your every decision.”
That was it.
The final line.
“Emma isn’t a ghost,” I said quietly. “She’s part of who we are. And Ellie doesn’t control me—she trusts me.”

I looked down at my daughter.
“And I won’t break that trust.”
