Chapter 3: The Choice

I turned to the officiant.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “There won’t be a wedding today.”
A collective gasp echoed through the crowd.
Vanessa’s face drained of color.
“You can’t be serious,” she whispered.
“I am.”
“You’re humiliating me in front of everyone!”
“No,” I said. “You did that yourself the moment you locked my daughter away.”
Her voice rose.
“I gave you everything! I stood by you! I tried to build a life with you!”
“And I believed you,” I said. “That’s on me.”
I paused.
“But this—this isn’t love.”
Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears, but they didn’t move me anymore.
“Then what is?” she demanded.
