Chapter 11 - The Witness at Table Twelve.

On Monday, Richard finally requested a meeting.

Not at home.

Not at his office.

At the restaurant.

The same private dining room where Elena had torn the itinerary.

He said he wanted to "end the spectacle."

Elena agreed under one condition.

Caleb and Diane would attend.

Richard accepted.

When Elena arrived, he was already seated.

He looked older than he had a week earlier.

Not broken.

Not defeated.

Just deprived of certainty.

The four of them sat without ordering food.

Richard looked at Elena first.

"I made mistakes."

She waited.

"I should have explained the trip better."

Caleb laughed once, without humor.

Richard ignored him.

"I should have formalized your involvement before speaking to Harrington."

Elena folded her hands.

"I was never involved."

Richard's jaw tightened.

"You could have been."

"That is not the same thing."

Diane looked down at the table.

Richard turned toward her.

"And you had no right to take files from my office."

Diane's head snapped up.

Something changed in her expression.

For years, Elena had watched her mother shrink whenever Richard's voice sharpened.

This time, Diane did not.

"They were files with my children's names on them."

Richard stared at her.

"Our children."

"Then why were you the only one making decisions?"

The question landed harder than shouting could have.

Richard opened his mouth, then closed it.

A server passed the doorway.

Beyond him, the main dining room was busy with lunch.

At table twelve sat Martin Cole.

Richard noticed him.

His eyes narrowed.

"You brought Martin?"

Elena shook her head.

"No."

Martin stood and approached slowly.

"I came because Rose asked me to."

Richard's face hardened.

"Rose is dead."

Martin nodded.

"Her instructions are not."

He placed a sealed copy of Rose's letter on the table.

Richard did not touch it.

"You've been poisoning my children against me."

Martin remained calm.

"I showed them records."

"Records don't explain context."

Elena looked at her father.

"You keep saying that."

Richard turned to her.

"Because it's true."

"Then give us the context for the fake signatures."

He looked away.

"Give us the context for the holding account."

Silence.

"Give us the context for telling Harrington I was leaving my job."

Nothing.

Elena leaned back.

"You don't want context."

"You want control over the explanation."

Richard's face flushed.

"I was trying to keep this family secure."

Caleb finally spoke.

"By making us responsible for decisions we didn't make?"

Richard looked at him.

"You benefited too."

Caleb nodded.

"Sometimes."

Then he placed a printed form on the table.

"But this says I approved an account I had never heard of."

Richard looked at the page.

For the first time, his anger faded completely.

"What do you want?"

Elena answered.

"A full accounting."

"Of what?"

"Everything connected to our names."

Richard laughed softly.

"And if I refuse?"

Elena reached into her bag and placed the digital recorder on the table.

She did not press play.

She did not need to.

Richard recognized it immediately.

His face went pale.

From the main dining room, silverware clinked and people laughed.

At their table, nobody moved.

Then Richard whispered, "You found that."

May you like

Elena held his gaze.

"We found more than that."
