"I defended him yesterday."
"So did I for years," Elena said.

"Your father says you've frozen the family accounts."
Elena frowned.

"He says you canceled cards people were using for the trip."
"Those were not family cards."

"They were payment methods connected to me."
The line went quiet.
Elena continued before Melissa could interrupt.
"Did Dad tell you I was paying?"
"He said you wanted to do something generous for everyone."

"Then why did no one ask me?"
Melissa became defensive.
"Because Richard made it sound settled."

Ten minutes later, she received the answer.
A public post appeared on Richard's company page.
It described a "family leadership dispute" and implied Elena had abandoned a planned business transition after benefiting from years of Mercer family support.
The post did not accuse her directly.
