Chapter 3 - The Message on the Screen.

By midnight, the family group chat had become a courtroom.

"There has been a misunderstanding, and Elena is emotional."

That sentence made her angrier than the accusations.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was familiar.

Whenever Elena challenged him, Richard described her reaction instead of answering her question.

If she disagreed, she was tired.

If she refused, she was stressed.

If she demanded details, she was overthinking.

Now he was using the same trick on an audience.

Elena sat at her kitchen island in her apartment, still wearing the navy suit from dinner.

She opened her laptop and created a folder.

California Trip.

Inside it, she saved every email, invoice, confirmation, and message she had received.

Then she began building a timeline.

The first reservation had been made eleven weeks earlier.

The first deposit had been charged nine weeks earlier.

The altered business email had been created eight weeks earlier.

Richard had invited the extended family seven weeks earlier.

Elena had learned about the trip three weeks earlier, when Diane casually mentioned needing Elena's passport number.

At the time, Elena assumed her parents were asking whether she wanted to join them.

She had no idea they had already volunteered her money, reputation, and attendance.

Her phone rang again.

This time it was Diane.

Elena answered.

"Are you home?" her mother asked.

"Yes."

"Your father is very upset."

"I'm sure he is."

"He says the company could lose a major client because of tonight."

Elena closed her eyes.

There it was.

Not the family.

Not the cousins.

Not the canceled trip.

The company.

"What client?"

Diane hesitated.

"Harrington Development."

Elena opened her eyes.

Harrington Development was not attending the vacation.

But its founder, Samuel Harrington, owned the resort.

The trip had been designed to impress him.

Richard had never mentioned that.

"Mom, was this vacation actually a business meeting?"

Silence.

"Your father thought it could be both."

"Did he tell the family?"

"They didn't need all the details."

Elena almost dropped the phone.

"Did he tell me?"

Diane's voice softened.

"He knew you would say no if he made it sound like business."

The truth landed harder because her mother said it so simply.

They had known.

They had planned around her refusal before giving her the chance to refuse.

A notification appeared on Elena's laptop.

New email.

The sender was Samuel Harrington.

Subject: Regarding Your Father's Proposal.

Elena opened it.

The message was brief.

Samuel said he had received Richard's proposal for a partnership and was surprised to see Elena listed as Chief Strategy Officer of Mercer Advisory.

Elena read that line again.

Chief Strategy Officer.

She had never worked for Mercer Advisory.

She had never agreed to work for Mercer Advisory.

Yet attached to the email was a glossy proposal deck with her photograph on page three.

Her professional biography appeared underneath.

Her current employer was mentioned only as "previous experience."

Elena's hands became cold.

Diane was still talking on the phone.

"Your father just needs you to come back tomorrow and explain that everyone overreacted."

Elena scrolled through the proposal.

On page fourteen, Richard promised Harrington Development access to Elena's corporate network and strategic leadership.

On page nineteen, he described the California trip as the "informal launch gathering" for their new family partnership.

Elena stopped breathing for a moment.

"Mom."

Diane went quiet.

"Did Dad tell you I was joining his company?"

Another silence.

Longer this time.

"He said you would eventually understand why it made sense."

Elena looked at the smiling photograph of herself inside a company she had never joined.

Then she saw the signature at the bottom of the proposal.

Richard Mercer, Founder and Managing Partner.

Elena Mercer, Chief Strategy Officer.

The signature beneath her name was identical to the one on the resort guarantee.

This was bigger than one forged page.

Someone had been signing Elena's future for her.
