Chapter 8 - The Family Meeting.

Diane's confession lasted almost an hour.

The resort guarantee had not been the first time Richard asked her to copy Elena's signature.

There had been a sponsorship letter two years earlier.

A recommendation for a vendor.

A statement confirming Elena's supposed advisory role.

Diane insisted none of them involved direct withdrawals from Elena's accounts.

That detail did not comfort Elena.

"Why would you keep doing it?"

Diane wiped her face with a tissue.

"Because every time I objected, he said I was sabotaging the family."

Caleb looked away.

The phrase belonged to all of them.

Sabotaging the family.

Embarrassing the family.

Abandoning the family.

Different words for the same demand.

Do what Richard wants or accept responsibility for everyone's discomfort.

Elena stood near the fireplace.

"We need to tell everyone the truth."

Diane's face tightened.

"Not publicly."

"Why not?"

"Because this is still our family."

Elena shook her head.

"He already made it public."

That evening, Caleb created a video call for the relatives who had been invited to California.

Twenty people joined.

Richard did not.

Aunt Melissa looked annoyed.

Uncle Grant looked skeptical.

Several cousins looked mostly uncomfortable.

Elena did not make a speech.

She shared her screen.

First, she showed the itinerary.

Then the altered email address.

Then the guarantee form.

Then Richard's messages describing Elena as the host.

Then the proposal naming her Chief Strategy Officer.

Finally, she showed the formal notice from her employer demanding that Mercer Advisory stop using her professional identity.

Nobody interrupted for almost a minute.

Aunt Melissa spoke first.

"Richard said you signed all of this."

"I didn't."

"Then who did?"

Elena looked at Diane's small video square.

Her mother went pale.

Before Elena could answer, Richard joined the call.

His camera switched on.

He was sitting in his office.

"This has gone far enough."

Nobody greeted him.

Richard looked directly into the camera.

"Elena is presenting private business documents without context."

Elena remained calm.

"Then provide the context."

"Gladly."

Richard leaned forward.

"For years, I invested in my children."

"Education."

"Housing."

"Connections."

"Opportunities."

"I built the foundation they stand on."

Caleb muted himself for a second, visibly furious.

Richard continued.

"The California trip was intended to create an opportunity that would benefit all of us."

Elena asked one question.

"Did I agree to join your company?"

Richard hesitated.

The entire call noticed.

"You knew it was under discussion."

"Did I agree?"

His expression hardened.

"Not formally."

Aunt Melissa leaned toward her camera.

"Then why did you tell us she had?"

Richard's eyes moved.

For the first time, he was not controlling the room.

Uncle Grant spoke next.

"And why did you tell me Elena was paying for my room because she wanted to?"

Richard's voice sharpened.

"Because I expected my daughter to honor the family's plans."

The words hung there.

Expected.

Not asked.

Expected.

Elena did not need to argue anymore.

Richard had finally said the quiet part clearly enough for everyone to hear.

Then another person joined the call.

The name on the screen was Samuel Harrington.

Richard froze.

May you like

Samuel adjusted his glasses.

"Richard," he said calmly, "I think everyone should hear what you told me the California trip was really for."
