Chapter 4: Sirens in the Night

Clara buried her face against her father's heavy wool overcoat.
She inhaled the comforting, familiar scent of cedar and old leather.
For the first time all evening, she allowed herself to truly sob.
Arthur held her securely, his large hand gently stroking her ruined hair.
He murmured soft, reassuring promises into the cold night air.
Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights of police cruisers suddenly illuminated the city streets below.
The jarring wail of sirens echoed loudly against the towering glass skyscrapers.
Inside the ballroom, the atmosphere had shifted from shocked silence to chaotic whispering.
Two uniformed police officers quickly strode through the grand mahogany doors.
Their heavy duty belts jingled sharply with every authoritative step.
The hotel security guards immediately flagged them down near the marble pillar.
Lucas was still standing there, straightening his rumpled tuxedo jacket with forced arrogance.
He plastered a fake, charming smile on his face as the officers approached.
"Officers, there has been a terrible misunderstanding," Lucas began smoothly.
"My wife simply had too much to drink and suffered a clumsy fall."
Arthur heard the blatant lie through the open balcony door.
His body went completely rigid with renewed anger.
He gently pulled away from Clara and looked her directly in the eyes.
"Are you ready to finish this?" Arthur asked her quietly.
Clara looked at her father, then over to Elena, who gave a supportive nod.
She wiped her tears away with the ruined white handkerchief.
She took a deep, steadying breath and nodded bravely.
Arthur wrapped his arm protectively around her shoulders and guided her inside.
The crowd parted once again as Clara stepped back into the brilliant chandelier light.
The two police officers turned their attention toward the bruised, trembling woman.
One officer immediately pulled out a small notepad and clicked his pen.
"Ma'am, can you tell us exactly what happened here tonight?" the officer asked gently.
Lucas glared at Clara, his dark eyes silently threatening her to keep her mouth shut.
Clara felt a momentary spike of pure, paralyzing fear.
Then, Elena’s father stepped squarely into the center of the room.
"I saw the entire thing, Officer," the older gentleman announced loudly.
"That man struck his wife across the face without any provocation whatsoever."
Several other guests, emboldened by the older man's courage, began to murmur their agreement.
"I saw it too," a woman in a red dress chimed in nervously.
"He hit her so hard she almost fell over," another man added.
Lucas's fake smile vanished completely as the walls closed in around him.
He looked frantically around the room, realizing his wealth and charm could not save him this time.
The second police officer calmly unclipped the handcuffs from his belt.
"Sir, I am going to need you to turn around and place your hands behind your back," the officer ordered.
May you like
Clara watched in stunning disbelief as cold steel clicked securely around her husband's wrists.
The long, suffocating nightmare was finally coming to an end.
