Chapter 7: The Morning Light

Sunlight filtered softly through the familiar lace curtains of Clara’s childhood bedroom.

She woke up slowly to the gentle sound of birds singing in the garden below.

For a brief, terrifying second, a sharp panic seized her chest.

She expected to hear Lucas’s heavy, angry footsteps pacing out in the hallway.

Then she recognized the pale yellow wallpaper and the antique oak dresser.

She was completely safe inside her father’s fortified estate.

Clara sat up against the plush pillows and let out a long, shuddering breath.

Her left cheek throbbed with a dull, persistent ache.

She carefully swung her legs over the edge of the large canopy bed.

She walked slowly across the fluffy carpet toward the attached bathroom.

Clara turned on the warm vanity lights and looked directly into the mirror.

The brutal mark on her face had turned a deep, angry shade of purple overnight.

It was a horrific, undeniable testament to the violence she had secretly endured.

Yet, for the very first time, she did not instinctively reach for her heavy concealer.

She traced the outer edge of the swelling lightly with her fingertip.

It was the ugly, physical proof that her suffocating nightmare was finally over.

A soft, polite knock suddenly sounded at her heavy bedroom door.

"Come in," Clara called out gently.

The wooden door opened to reveal her father carrying a large silver tray.

Arthur had personally brought her a steaming cup of tea and a plate of fresh toast.

"Good morning, sweetheart," Arthur said warmly.

He set the breakfast tray carefully on the small reading table near the window.

"How are you feeling today?" he asked with genuine, deep concern in his eyes.

Clara walked over and wrapped her arms tightly around his waist.

"I feel like I can finally breathe again," she whispered honestly.

Arthur kissed the top of her blonde head with immense fatherly affection.

"I have already spoken with the absolute best divorce attorneys in the entire city," Arthur informed her.

"They are drafting the emergency restraining order and filing the divorce papers right now."

Clara pulled back slightly and looked up at his determined, unyielding face.

"Will I have to see him in court?" she asked nervously.

Arthur shook his head firmly side to side.

"My legal team will handle every single interaction with him moving forward."

He handed her the warm porcelain teacup with a highly reassuring smile.

"You just focus entirely on resting and healing."
