Chapter 6: The Sanctuary

The heavy glass doors of the hotel finally closed behind them.

The crisp, freezing air of the city felt entirely different now.

It no longer felt like a suffocating trap.

It felt like the sharp, clean breath of absolute freedom.

Arthur kept his heavy arm wrapped securely around Clara's shoulders.

He guided her gently down the sweeping concrete steps toward the waiting town car.

His trusted driver, Thomas, was already standing at attention by the open rear door.

Thomas took one look at Clara's bruised face and immediately averted his eyes out of respect.

"To the main estate, sir?" Thomas asked in a hushed, professional tone.

"Yes, Thomas," Arthur replied firmly.

"Take the scenic route along the river so we can avoid the downtown traffic."

Clara slid gratefully into the heated leather seat of the luxurious vehicle.

Arthur climbed in right beside her and pulled the heavy door shut.

The sudden silence inside the soundproof cabin was incredibly overwhelming.

Clara let her head fall back against the soft leather headrest.

All the adrenaline that had been keeping her upright suddenly vanished.

A deep, bone-aching exhaustion quickly took its place.

The town car pulled smoothly away from the flashing police lights at the curb.

Clara watched the towering hotel shrink away through the tinted rear window.

"I need to go back to the house eventually," Clara whispered into the quiet car.

"My passport and all my important documents are still locked in the bedroom safe."

Arthur reached over and gently covered her trembling hands with his own.

"You are not stepping foot inside that house ever again," Arthur stated with absolute finality.

"I will send a team of lawyers and movers to collect your belongings tomorrow morning."

Clara turned to look at her father's stern, deeply protective profile in the dim light.

"He is going to fight me on everything, Daddy," she said nervously.

"Lucas will not let this marriage end without a vicious public war."

Arthur let out a low, confident scoff.

"Let him try," the older man replied dangerously.

"He has absolutely no idea what kind of war he just started."

The town car glided seamlessly onto the quiet road running alongside the dark river.

The rhythmic hum of the engine slowly lulled Clara's racing mind.

For the first time in three years, she did not have to worry about walking on eggshells.

She closed her tired eyes completely.

She let the gentle motion of the car carry her toward true safety.
