Chapter 10 - Remove Her.

The phrase spread through Claire's mind all night.
Remove her.
It could mean remove her from office.
Remove her from the board.
Remove her from the company.
The memo itself used careful corporate language.
It recommended a misconduct review, immediate suspension, and public messaging that framed Claire as unreliable.
Nothing in it suggested physical harm.
That distinction mattered.
It also made the plan colder.
Eleanor had designed Claire's professional destruction like a marketing campaign.
By morning, Jonah had recovered deleted messages from the backup.
One exchange showed Ethan asking why Claire's credentials were being used after midnight.
Eleanor replied that it was "necessary housekeeping."
Another showed Ethan objecting to filing the affidavit.
Eleanor answered with one sentence.
IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THIS FAMILY, SIGN IT.
Claire read it several times.
Ethan had betrayed her.
But he had also been manipulated by the same system that had trained him to confuse obedience with loyalty.
That did not excuse him.
It explained him.
At noon, the independent directors requested Eleanor step aside while the investigation continued.
She refused.
Instead, she announced she had enough shareholder proxies to call a special meeting.
Her plan was obvious.
If she could change the board before the audit finished, she could control the investigation.
Mara examined the proxy list.
Several belonged to small family trusts.
One name surprised Claire.
Mercer Legacy Trust.
Her mother's trust.
Claire stared at it.
"She is voting my trust?"
Mara's face hardened.
"Thomas is still listed as trustee in the old registry."
Thomas had not yet been legally removed.
Eleanor was using his trustee authority through a proxy he claimed he never signed.
Another possible forgery.
Claire called Thomas.
He arrived carrying a folder.
Inside was his original resignation as trustee.
Dated six years earlier.
Never filed.
"Why wasn't this processed?" Mara asked.
Thomas looked ashamed.
"Eleanor said the trust had no remaining assets."
Claire's anger returned.
"So you stopped checking."
"Yes."
Jonah examined the trust ledgers.
One asset remained.
Not cash.
Not property.
Voting rights attached to a block of founder shares that had never been properly transferred.
Those rights could determine the special meeting.
Claire looked at Mara.
"Who controls them now?"
Mara smiled for the first time in two days.
"If the trustee resignation is valid and no successor was properly appointed, the court can appoint an interim trustee."
Claire understood.
"Eleanor doesn't control those votes."
"Not yet."
The hearing was scheduled for the next morning.
That evening, Claire returned to the Vale estate with a neutral officer to collect personal belongings.
The dining room had been cleaned.
The broken plate was gone.
A new place setting sat exactly where she had been seated.
Eleanor stood alone beside the table.
"You've made your point," she said.
Claire continued packing a small box of mail.
"No."
Eleanor's voice sharpened.
"You think this ends with you winning a board vote?"
Claire stopped.
"What does it end with?"
Eleanor walked closer.
"You losing every person you thought was family."
Claire looked at her.
"I already learned what that was worth."
Eleanor smiled faintly.
Then she placed a sealed envelope on the table.
"Before you leave, you should know what your mother really thought of Thomas."
Claire did not touch it.
Eleanor turned away.
May you like
On the front, written in Lydia's handwriting, were three words.
FOR CLAIRE ONLY.
