Chapter 4 - The Emergency Vote.

By afternoon, Claire's name was already moving through the company like a rumor.

Employees had received a carefully worded email saying she was on temporary leave pending review.

The message never mentioned the forged signatures.

It never mentioned Ashford Strategic Partners.

It certainly never mentioned the plate.

Instead, it described "questions regarding executive authorization practices."

Claire read the sentence three times.

"They're trying to make me look like the problem."

Mara nodded.

"They need you defensive before the board meets."

Jonah placed a printed timeline on the table.

The alleged misconduct began exactly eight months earlier.

That was the same month Ashford had been formed.

"They built a trail backward," he said.

Claire understood.

Someone had created questionable transfers under her credentials and was now using those transfers as evidence against her.

It was elegant.

It was also reckless.

Mara filed an emergency request demanding access to the original server logs before the board meeting.

Two hours later, the court granted limited preservation.

That should have calmed Claire.

Instead, it made her nervous.

If Eleanor had rushed the meeting, she probably believed she could still win.

That evening, Thomas finally answered the question he had avoided.

Years earlier, Lydia had suspected Eleanor of moving partnership money through inflated vendor contracts.

Thomas had confronted his wife.

Eleanor denied it.

Then Lydia died before the internal review was finished.

Thomas chose silence.

"I told myself the company needed stability," he said.

Claire stared at him.

"You chose your marriage."

Thomas did not argue.

"Yes."

"And my inheritance paid for that choice."

His face fell.

"Yes."

Claire stood and walked to the window.

For years, Thomas had treated her like a daughter.

Now every birthday toast and family vacation felt contaminated by what he had hidden.

Mara broke the silence.

"Will you testify to this before the board?"

Thomas hesitated.

That hesitation told Claire everything.

"You still want to protect her."

"I want to protect the company."

Claire turned.

"They are not the same thing."

Thomas left without promising anything.

At nine that night, Claire received a message from an unknown number.

It contained one photograph.

Her mother's old desk.

The brass key Thomas had given her would fit its central drawer.

Below the photograph were six words.

DON'T LET THEM OPEN IT FIRST.

Claire immediately called Jonah.

The original Vale Mercer hotel had been closed for renovation.

Only executives and contractors had access.

Someone wanted Claire inside.

Or someone wanted her to think she should go inside.

Mara advised waiting until morning.

Claire agreed.

Then another message arrived.

This time it was a security image.

Ethan stood inside the old hotel lobby.

The timestamp showed eight minutes earlier.

Claire's stomach tightened.

Ethan had gone there first.

She looked at Mara.

"If that drawer matters, he knows it matters too."

Mara grabbed her coat.

They reached the hotel twenty minutes later with Jonah and a contracted security officer.

The lobby lights were on.

The elevator doors stood open.

On the fourth floor, Claire heard drawers opening in the dark.

She entered her mother's former office.

Ethan was there.

The desk drawer was already unlocked.

He held a yellow envelope in his hand.

Claire stopped in the doorway.

"Put it down."

Ethan looked at her.

For the first time since dinner, he did not look angry.

He looked terrified.

"You don't want to read this."

Claire stepped closer.

"That's exactly why I do."

May you like

He tightened his grip on the envelope.

Then the fire alarm began screaming through the empty building.
